'No Audio Device' WinXP

I recently had to update the BIOS and then had WinXP reinstalled the Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection in order to reestablish my Ethernet connection with my network. After doing this, I did not get sound from my speakers. I went to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me no audio device. Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.

I went into the BIOS to see if the Audio was actually On. It was not. So, I turned it On, rebooted and WinXP detected New Hardware. I ignored the WinXP Hardware Install and inserted the Dell Resource CD: Drivers & Utilities and it seemed to install the driver software. When rebooting I did not get the WinXP Found New Hardware, but there is still no sound and when I got to the Volume Tab of Sounds & Audio Devices it tells me no audio device. Yet, when I click the Audio Tab and Hardware Tab, all my settings, devices and drivers are working properly.

I attached my Plantronics USB Headphones because it did not require an On-Board sound card and I hoped that at least the headphones might work& they do not work, so I detached them.

I emailed Dell this morning and hoped they would answer quickly (big surprise, no return email yet). This is truly an inconvenience because I have a voice chat session scheduled for tomorrow. I would a grateful for and helpful ideas?

yes I was able to read the information on the other forum he's basically saying the same as I am, though I like to go clean slate get the system functioning on the mainboard devices first.
One question strikes me you have a lot of USB 2, take from the other forum

Looking at the back of you tower can see that many USB connections?

have you checked something so simple yet can be grossly over looked, when adding a sound card you move the speakers to the new sound card?

From my undersanding, XP remembers every time I connect an external USB device such as an external drive. So all those USB listings are just "gohsts".

Now that you mention "moving the speakers", I recently had my computer checked over by our local Best Buy Geek Squad (computer repair guys). They said they ran some diagnostics and everything was ok, but who lnows what they really did.

My tower has 6 USB ports Plus, I used to have a USB 7 port hub and used 2 of those. That is most likely the real reason.

trying to keep this simple for you, i'm sure you are very tired of it but do please persist time is of no consequence here, if it's not a hardware issue that is a faulty audio card.
I still like the idea of getting your normal audio functioning then you can at least use it for awhile take a rest and think about the steps you have covered and what new tricks you have learnt and what's the next step.
Do you currently have any audio out of the speakers?
Which media player do you use? this can also be a trick over looked the enw WMP has a very small button next to the volume sider this can be muted without knowing.

I'd like to offer this tool I use it's called siw,
System Information for Windows
is a tool that gathers detailed information about your system properties and settings.
Much more than the windows system Info.
And you can save the logfile of the inventory.

Ok, ...another day for me. You must be from another coubtry or at least a different time zone than me.

Anyway, I checked out SIW and installed it. SIW does indeed show allot of information, but I just do not know what I am looking for.

I just want to clearify....

1. I have detached USB printer.
2. I do have a USB keyboard and a USB mouse attached.
3. I did not open my computer to take my sound card out.

I am sorry if you miscommunicated the above information before. Be that as it may, what am I looking for in SIW?

Hi AKMARK5000 yes i'm in Australia,
I was hoping SIW would show any problem devices.
But if you still have the PCI audio card installed you have confirmed this,
then with the mainboard onboard card it will be difficult to determin what is the problem, to remove the drivers and get the mainboard audio functioning again, cleanout the PCI audio drivers so you can clean install this audio card again.
it's very confusing to understand what or how many audio cards you have installed, there should be only one in number one slot on the mainboard since windows can only deal with audio driver,
then you added another PCI audio creative was it?
Your specs say you have two, and the number 2 is the oem for DEL?

Australia, mmm, one of the few places I'd actually consider living. I am from the United Sates.
Do not go by the original post, Ill post you new information. How would I do this with SIW?

It's Friday for me. So, as a last effort to try to resolve my issue, I will try and post new information today or tonight (my time zone).
I am just going to prepare for a clean XP reinstall on Saturday or Sunday in order to see if that will actually resolve anything. I know its allot of work to reinstall the programs, applications, and other data. But it seems like it is my only option if I want to get my issue resolved.

good move, yes i read the details there thanks says the same thing really,
as I said AKMARK5000 your best option is to remove the card get your default working then reseat or re-install the card.
it's really quite simple to do if this is a PCI card, did you install the PCI card?
As in open the case and insert the card into a slot?
Just take it out but do unpower the machine remove the power cord complete

On the other sight I asked In order to get the on-board sound going what steps do I have to do besides remove the SB Card? -- I'm asking you incase the other site does not answer. And besides, you may know something the other guy does not know.

thanks for your vote of confidence i'm pretty sure they're in the know, yeah take a well earnt rest no worries there.
What I would do,
power off remove the PCI audio card you inserted. power in again reboot
uninstall all traces of the new card first.
check there is no " other " devices uninstall that as well.
uninstall onboard default audio card then reboot.
Windows should find the drivers automatically and put things right.
hopefully you'll have audio again using your default onboard audio.
if not check the device manager and install or upgrade drivers manually
USe the VIEW unhide devices to check if there is still some device using them

locate your default audio drivers for your DEL first.
I just wish to mention if you have a setup disc this is preferred incase you have over written the default drivers for the DEL onboard by accident and this has caused the audio problem in the first place.
May have been what created the other unknown device.
Get to this point when your ready ie have time I can wait and will receive an email when you post back your results.
Enjoy having sounds again.
then we can move onto installing the PCI audio card.

I went to take out the SB Live card. Originally when I just reseated the card in the same slot I didn't thin anything of the fact that the SB Live was attached to the NIC card. It also seems there is another wire, maybe a power wire? In any case, I could disconnect the wire between th SB Live card and NIC card, but the other wire looks to be attached right to the SB Live card by a chip of some sort (I don't view this as normal). I just re-re-seated the SB Live card.

The SB live is this the PCI card you're adding? you can disable it in device manager
but if it has the wrong drivers you may not be able to get windows to switch drivers without forcing it.

correct
the fact you have "OTHER" device that's the one created because it can't find the hardware and why is it there :)
so to find the problem when there is duplicate devices windows can't find the right one and doesnt know how to so you'll need to remove all of them first then install the default one

Ok, I will try that but not until next weekend... I have some other stuff to do before then. I have an HP laptop running Vista. The sound is ok and supports my Plantronics USB Headset. I have hooked up my full size monitor, keyboard and gaming mouse so I am all set for the week.
