Question

ATI SB200 AC'97 Sound drivers

Asked by: el_boqueron

I have a Compaq Presario 3000, Model no R3460Ea, Product number PS680EA#ABU
I had to install a new hard drive but i have a problem with the sound.
The HP site does not list a driver. The ATI site does not list a driver.
Everest tells me it is an ATI SB200 AC'97 chip. All my googling so far has revealed nothing.
I did get one page that said I could use the Realtek drivers and I downloaded them (version 4.04) fromt he realtek site. On install iget the yellow triangle and a message telling the device could not be started (error 10)
I am pretty sure i cannot be the only person to have had this problem and I am opening this to your expertise.

this website will probably be your best bet
http://www.driverguide.com/

Thanks for that.
I am actually a member of that site but sadly they could not offer a driver.
However, by way of oneof their adverts I ended up at http://www.elhvb.com/mboards/vtech/strings/atibios.html
which gave me a lot more detail about the motherboard andlet me to this site:
http://www.pcpartner.com
Which let me search and find the drivers I needed from their site.
I am downloading them now and will try them to see if they work

keep me posted

Latest situation:
I was able to download the drivers from pc partner and install them.
They turned out to be the realtek drivers again.
I still get the yellow triangle and error code 10.

normally, if the compaq site does not list drivers, they are included in XP
This means that :
1- your sound device is not enabled in Bios  solution : check and enable it
2- it is bad - test with another sound card

by: el_boqueronPosted on 2008-03-22 at 11:15:10ID: 21187182

Thanks nobus.
1. The device is enabled in the BIOS
2. Iti s a laptop therefore i cannot simply try another sound card. However the sound was working prior to the hard drive being replaced.

Have you already tried removing it from device manager by selecting uninstall and then rebooting and seeing if it installed it properly ?
If ti comes up with a prompt upon reboot select to let windows go out to the internet (providing you have internet access on the pc) then select automatic and next.

Let me know

From my experience not having the UAA would not cause a code 10 it causes a question mark in device manager. I may be mistaken on this but I think the UAA is very vendor specific. That is why Microsoft does not offer it on there site but has the articles about the UAA and to contact the vendor. Also I think this laptop is too old to have the UAA drivers issue. I would definately make a restore point just in case prior to installing any UAA driver.

I am wondering how it is listed in device manager because according to your laptop the Modem uses AC97 Drivers
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=453198&lang=en

does it actually have it listed under the sound category or is it as an unknown device or by itself ?

You could also try the Belarc advisor to see what it thinks the sound card is http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

You could try not only removing the sound card but also removing the modem from device manager then rebooting. Maybe there is a conflict there

if it's HD audio and onboard, chances are high that you will need the UAA package (best bet is to get the one from HP, it works with most HD audio chips), and the Realtek AC97 High Definition Codec.

Ok, people
sorry about the delay in getting back to you.
I have tried and tried to contact the client to get him to return the lap top for more trials but he simply doesnt bring it back in.
I am going to close the question and award points to you all for your help. I know this is not good for others with the same problem but dead horses and flogging are words that come to mind.
I really appreciate the time and effort you all put in.

No fault of the experts here, there was simply no response from the client in an effort to bring the lap top back for further work
