Lost Audio: Got ports But Error Message Wants Hardware or Drivers

Tags: AMD Athlon XP 1800+, WaveOut output v2.0.2a error "A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system." Error Code: 2

I've got an ECS K7S5A motherboard with audio ports but I get the error message "WaveOut output v2.0.2a  error "A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system."  Error Code: 2 "  when I try to run my WinAmp.  There is no sound card in a PCI slot but I don't recall needing one before I did some work on the machine.  It's an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1.49 GHz with 64m RAM and WIndows XP Pro
