you should be checking the laptop's website for the 64 bit driver for XP, just incase they have tweaked/updated it. Your other option is to check the chipset manufacturer, for example Realtek or Soundmax are the more common chips, check Device Manager for the exact model.
in the meantime, you should be able to disable the card/port, which will stop the error messages. when your ready to re-install, enable the card, uninstall the driver, then from the Device Manager, tell it to rescan, and then say you will tell it where to look for the driver (do not auto-detect). Give it the file path to the driver's INF file and then select, hopefully on the list it will show the soundcard model, then proceed as normal, if it pops up with an objection the the driver is not signed, ignore and choose continue.
this should then re-apply the driver update and the control panel application.

U can try driver Magician it will automatically detect the Best driver for ur sound card.
and if u are doing it manually be sure u had downloaded the 64bit driver of ur sound card
