Testing a HeadSet

We have constant problems with our headsets and IP telephone system. The major bottleneck is that windows doesn't have any software that can evaluate how well the microphone on a headset is working. What i need is some free software that enables me to do this test so i know if its the headset that needs to be replaced or not. Some software that can boost the microphone would be nice to. Its seem to be a constant problem that people don't here us as well as we hear them.
