Question

GTS 250 Graphics card freezing system when playing games

Asked by: Pickriff

Heres the deal,  Built a new PC with the following Specs:

Intel core 2 duo E7400 2.8GHz socket 775
BFG GTS250 OC 512mb GDDR3
OCZ 4GB DDR2 800MHz
2 x 250 gb sata hd maxtor
Eye-T 750W modular power supply
Sata DVD RW
Vista home premium 32bit
ASrock N7AD-SLI Mobo

Installs fine, driver go on fine, all looks to be working ok, 3d mark and cpu/gpu temps at acceptable levels.cpu running at 30 C idle, load 42 C,   GPU idle 38 C, loaded 52 C.

Whenever any game is started it works for a few minutes then locks up the system, complete freeze so a depress of the power button is required.

First sweeped the graphics drivers and reinstalled up to date whql drivers - same issue
tested memory and replaced with klnown good -same issue
replaced graphics card with Gforce 8600GTS - all worked fine
Placed New GTS250 in another pc with an Asus Maximus Formula MObo - no issues

It leaves me to the conclusion that either the motherboard simply doesnt support this card or the Power supply is insufficient or faulty.

Next stop is to change out the power supply with a meatier one see what happens
If anyone has any ideas of what else i could try i would appreciate it

Thanks

I'd try another power supply(like the one form the system with the maximus board). I can't find the specs for this one but going by price it's probably a low quality one, I know I can't get a good 750w for that much here in the states, for a good quality 750w psu your going to spend around £60-70. I usually stick with Corsair and Pc power and cooling for power supply manufactures.

That kind of freeze indicates it is only when you use the intense 3D graphics that the system locks up.  Lockups are typically heat-related, power-related, or driver-related, so it's a question of elimination.  It sounds like you have eliminated heat, judging by the temperatures you're seeing.  A different (more powerful) power supply will resolve another cause, and changing drivers (perhaps a few versions back) will resolve that cause.

I just got this card too and was having the occasional lockup in games followed by a BSOD.  Then the PC would turn off so mine was a heat issue.

I fixed it by keeping the fan's running at 100% in the BIOS instead of it fluxuating with the load.

That might have been a mobo issue of mine, but may be worth a check.

Managed to resolve the issue, by replacing both sticks of ram... now the ram itself was not faulty but i got this issue only when using this ram with this graphics card, all other older graphics cards Nvidia series 8 or ATI 3800 worked fine.  Could be some sort of incompatibility problem with the mobo, but these sticks were taken from The QVL for the mobo so i dont know, anyway all fixed and working now thanks for all your suggestions.
