Question

Disable Virtual Desktop

Asked by: 12string

Hello Experts,

I have a Dell t5400 running windows xp sp2. the video card is a Quadro FX 1400.  When i go above resolution 1280X800 the display goes to a virtual desktop.  When I change my resolution to anything above that then it implies that it accepts the new resolution but you do not get the whole desktop to display in front of you but rather you move your mouse around the edges of the monitor and the display moves over to that area.  How do I disable virtual desktop?  I am pretty sure that is the correct name, if it isn't then please feel free to correct me.

I have been trying different things for the last 2 weeks with no results. Yes I have downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia's website. Date is 7/14/09 version 6.14.11.9038

Thanks for your help!

what monitor do u have, because the vidcard may be getting info from the monitor indicating it handle as high resolution as u are attempting?

by: eviningPosted on 2009-08-06 at 15:30:14ID: 25038718

correction, indicating it CANT handle the high resolution

Seen this issue before on 30" monitors that only support 2 resolutions 1280x800 and their native resolution of 2560x1600, any resolution other than those 2 will do what you're explaining.

I forgot to mention the monitor.  it is a Syncmaster 305t and yes it is a 30" monitor.

are u using a dual link dvi cable or a single link dvi cable?

by: jamietonerPosted on 2009-08-07 at 07:43:36ID: 25043213

According to Samsung this monitor only supports 2 resolutions 1280x800 and 2560x1600. Have you tried running it at 2560x1600?

by: 12stringPosted on 2009-08-07 at 09:39:19ID: 25044586

i am using a single link DVI cable.

I have tried the 2560x1600 and i get the same affect of virtual desktop.

by: 12stringPosted on 2009-08-07 at 09:41:03ID: 25044610

I have also connected a 17" CRT that I had hanging around and it responds like what you would expect, correctly.

by: jamietonerPosted on 2009-08-07 at 09:46:03ID: 25044672

You need a dual link dvi cable to get 2560x1600 as a single link cable doesn't support the bandwidth needed for such a high resolution. With a single link dvi cable the only resolution the monitor supports is 1280x800.

by: eviningPosted on 2009-08-07 at 11:50:30ID: 25045832

i had a feeling he only had a single link cable, hehe

by: jamietonerPosted on 2009-08-07 at 11:52:24ID: 25045842

I found it odd, usually 30" monitors ship with a dual link dvi cable.

Thanks for the input!  I will check Wednesday when I am back in the office.  Your right I am using the cables that came from Samsung.  I talked with first level and second level support and they never mentioned anything about single and dual DVI.

by: 12stringPosted on 2009-08-13 at 07:48:52ID: 25088927

I checked the cables and yes it was a single DVI cable.  Replaced the cable with a dual DVI and still got the same affect.  It did improve the signal such that I could now see the bootup process from the BIOS level.  I am still getting the virtual desktop affect though.  no solution yet.

by: jamietonerPosted on 2009-08-13 at 16:48:38ID: 25094226

If you're still seeing it at 2560x1600, try the monitor on another system that has a dual link dvi port.

by: 12stringPosted on 2009-08-14 at 08:36:10ID: 25099191

will do

by: 12stringPosted on 2009-08-16 at 09:08:45ID: 31612685

Sorry for not getting back sooner.  I found a dual DVI cable and i installed the original video card and now the display is responding correctly with all the different resolutions without the virtual desktop affect.  Thanks jamietoner and rest for your input!

PS the first video card was a Nvidia FX 1400 and the video card that worked was Nvidia FX570

i asked first about the single or dual link cable, hehe oh well
