Question

Won't detect TV

Asked by: skeetley

I am trying to use the VGA out on my PC to clone my desktop to my TV.

The DVI out goes to my monitor.  The VGA goes to a VGA/S video adaptor and the S video cable is plugged into my Sharp Aquos TV.  My video driver is a GeForce 6150LE.

The problem seems to be that the computer is not detecting the TV.  I have tried expanding the desktop, I have tried clicking the "force television detection" in the nVidia manager and I have done pretty much everything else I could think.

Was your VGA port designed to output s-video?  A simple adapter is not enough to make this work; the card has to be designed to work that way with extra signaling.  Otherwise, you either need to connect to your Sharp with VGA (I assume it doesn't have this, or you wouldn't be trying what you are doing) or convert to component video or s-video with a converter http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-video/video-converters/vga-rgb-hv-to-component-video/c10000-c11200-c11215-p1.html.

Several thoughts ...

First, as Callandor already noted, you can't simply use a VGA to sVideo adapter unless your video card supports that.    These only work if there's an s-video component on the otherwise unused pins of the DB15 connector.     If that's the issue here, you simple need to buy a converter -- such as this:  http://sewelldirect.com/PC-to-TV-Converter.asp   [or the last one in the list Callandor provided -- although it's more expensive, it also has additional output features]

Second, are you SURE the TV is set to the input you're trying to use?    If not, the input won't be active, and the PC won't detect it even if you're using the correct connection.

Third, is this an HDTV set?    If so, you'd be much better off using the HDMI input -- which you can connect directly to your DVI port with a simple adapter cable (the video signalling is identical).    If the TV is an HDTV I'd use your VGA output for your monitor (assuming it has dual inputs) and the DVI output for the TV.

... if the TV is an HDTV, this is all you need to connect your DVI output to an HDMI input:  http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2405&seq=1&format=2

Hi garycase,

You and Callandor have been a big help.  I like your cheap solution and am already a monoprice customer so that works out well.

My next question then is about audio.  The reason I was going S-video was so that I could hook up the audio components into the same input on my HDTV.  At least that was the plan.  I grabbed an audio jack splitter from monoprice so that my PC speakers and TV could be both hooked up at once, and then an audio jack to red/white components so that I could hook up the TV.

I do have an open HDMI input on my TV so your solution works nicely, but then how do I do audio?  Do you have any more awesome ideas?

I'll check later tonight, but I think my receiver has an open AUX port which would work, assuming that I am able to split and convert my PC audio out jack between my PC speakers and TV and also convert the split feed into component cables.  Would that work?

by: garycasePosted on 2009-09-03 at 16:10:24ID: 25255816

You simply feed the audio via an available audio input -- either on the TV or through your receiver.    Splitting the output will work well with an audio signal -- it's a high-impedance output, so reducing it will still have a high enough impedance for your audio devices (speakers & TV/receiver input).    Your TV MAY even support a separate audio input -- many do, for at least one or two of the HDMI inputs.

There's no easy way to add the audio to your HDMI signal when you're using a DVI -> HDMI cable.   [If your video card had an HDMI output, it would most likely support audio as well ... but that's not the case here.]
