I am not real knowledgeable on the technical side of video cards. I'm building a new PC and have bought a GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD6 (P55) motherboard that I'll put an intel i7 860 processor in. I'll be powering it with a Corsair 750 watt power supply (overkill?? - but I'll probably have 4 or more hard drives). I'll load this new machine with Windows 7. Probably 64 bit version.
I've budgeted $100-$200 for the card but would like to keep it more toward the $150 area. How do I use my video? Mostly I'll be watching training videos (avi, mov, wmv formats) but sometimes I'll sign up for online games like City of Heroes and play those for a few months until I get tired of them and then quit. The most graphic intensive thing I might do would be some video editing. I haven't done any yet but I've got some old family videos that I've had converted to video files and I've bought Cyberlink's PowerDirector 8 to edit them with. My wife is going to want to take some Photoshop courses (I've got Adobe CS3 Studio).
One day I might go with two monitors but I think most decent cards today have that capability. I'd want a card that would only use one slot and not cover up a useful slot next to it. Oh yeah - the quieter the better. Crossfire or SLI?? I don't hardly know what those do for you.
So maybe I could get by with an on board video chipset (no I probably couldn't, not really) but I want something that won't limit me too much even if I hardly ever put any stress on it. Plus this board doesn't have on board video.
I would like to buy a card made by a company that is good at updating their drivers. I'll probably never call tech support. I never have before. I would probably buy the card from newegg.com
I've never Overclocked anything except as an experiment and that was way back when on 386 and 486 processors. Or maybe it was Pentiums and Pentium 2s.
This is a 500 point question because it's hard to be right or wrong. It's all a matter of opinion and previous experience.
Ask me any questions you think are appropriate. Thanks for helping me.
