Question

dual monitors using on-board video card

Asked by: Newco

Hello All,
We have a Dell Optiplex 740 Enhanced that came with an integrated  dual-monitor video card; the problem is when I am trying to setup two monitors, both monitors display the same image. I went to the display configuration and tried to click on the option "extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor", but when I hit "Apply" nothing happens.
I called Dell support and after talking to hardware and software support, they told me that, even know the on-board video card supports two monitors I still need to buy a video card because integrated cards really do not support two monitors.
Is this true?  The on-board video card is GEforce 6150.
I have about 6 other machines with integrated on-board dual video cards and need to setup dual monitors; so this will be an unexpected expense.

Thank you,

I have the same issue.  Found that one video card with 2 monitors will show the same image.  This is due to presentations or otherwise where you want to have a local display and projector/large monitor, etc.  I  haven't found a way to "split" it into an extended desktop monitor.  The dual-monitor would serve the same purpose as a vga/divx output on a laptop where you can have your laptop showing the same thing as what is being projected, but having this same functionality on a "workstation"

Think you can split it, if you just use the actual video chipset management utility.

Is it Intel or NVidia?

In either case, check the control Panel for one of the Video managment utilities, and see if you can use these instead of just right-clicking thhe display > properties route.

If you can't find thhe utilities, then download them from either Dell, Intel, or Nvidia.

Thanks Jeff; yes that is the same information I got.

WiReDNeT: I already tried that, but when you go in the Advance settings there is only one radio buttong (single display) and down at the bottom asks if you want a TV to be recognized. If I check yes, the monitors flicker but nothing happens either.

FYI, I also tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall; tried a different driver with no luck.

the video card is nVidia GEforce 6150.

The integrated card doesn't support extended desktop, it supports clone mode only. If you want extended desktop mode you'll need to add a video card. I suggest the 8400gs its cheap and supports dual monitors on it's own.
