Think you can split it, if you just use the actual video chipset management utility.
Is it Intel or NVidia?
In either case, check the control Panel for one of the Video managment utilities, and see if you can use these instead of just right-clicking thhe display > properties route.
If you can't find thhe utilities, then download them from either Dell, Intel, or Nvidia.

I have the same issue. Found that one video card with 2 monitors will show the same image. This is due to presentations or otherwise where you want to have a local display and projector/large monitor, etc. I haven't found a way to "split" it into an extended desktop monitor. The dual-monitor would serve the same purpose as a vga/divx output on a laptop where you can have your laptop showing the same thing as what is being projected, but having this same functionality on a "workstation"
