Question

Multiple Displays clone PC to HDTV NVIDIA

Asked by: goblue1

I am trying to display my PC screen on a secondary 1080p HDTV.  All I want to do is clone what I see on my PC, to a 40 inch Toshia HDTV.

Every time I run all of the configuration methods from dualview to clone etc either one of two things happens.

-it changes my PC screen to a poorer resolution, or does not fit

or

-it does an extended PC screen to HDTV mode extended desktop which I don't want

I can't find a happy medium or way to run 1680 x 1050 on the PC screen, and at this point I don't even care what resolution on the HDTV (I just can't get it to stop messing with the PC screen once I initiate a secondary view on HDTV) but it supports 1080p resolution.

NVDIA Geforce 8600GT
Toshiba 40 inch HDTV 1080p

connected by component cable using NVIDIA R G B adapter to HDTV

DVI cable going to PC monitor

Ideally when using clone mode the displays should support the same resolutions, if they don't you're rarely ever going to find a happy medium, especially when the displays use different aspect ratios. The highest resolution they both support is most likely 1280x720 which will look ok on the tv but not so much on the monitor. You could always get a new monitor thats supports a 1080p resolution.

I did forget to list the max resolutions, sorry about that

Monitor is an AOC widescreen max resolution of 2048 x 1536

And the TV would be 1920 x 1080.

All I really want to do is keep the PC monitor resolution where I have it 1680x1050, and project a signal out and have not been able to even do that.  I don't mind what resolution shows up on the televsion I just want to be able to see something.  :)  I would think you can do that, but from what you mention I guess the TV doesn't want to cooperate with a forced 1680 x 1050 resolution.

i've a similar set up, my monitor displays in 1920 x 1200, and i've a second output to a 32" tv which is configured as "independent" and runs at 1920 x 1800, and i'm able to change the resolution on each screen respectively.

in my case, i have it set up like this:

In the nvidia control panel (right click the desktop >> nvidia control panel (or control panel, if it isn't on the desktop menu))

under the Display tab choose 'Set up multiple displays', and choose the bottom radio checkbox which is "configured independently from each other (dualview)" then set your primary display to your computers monitor.

once that's done choose the 'change resolution' option in the vidia control panel, and you should be able to switch between the displays and change eaches resolution respectively.

hope this helps, let us know how it works out.

This seems to work regarding the multiple displays on each screen but what it also does it extends the windows desktop as if I had both monitors sitting on a desk in front of me.  I want it to clone what I am seeing in front of me on the secondary monitor.  And I am not sure if I mentioned that when I do the clone option in the setup multiple displays area, it forces a lower resolution on the PC screen.  Any time I have been able to get a signal on the HDTV, it looked great, but either it is an extended area of my desktop to the right, or it forces the resolution on my PC screen lower...1600x900

After having done this I save all settings ....leave....to try and further resolve I went in to the card setup (right click desktop, properties, settings) i selected the hdtv monitor (2) and unchecked the extend desktop feature.  Each time this is done, the HDTV monitor signal goes black as if I want to disable the actual signal.

ah i see, i don't think it's possible to do a clone view with different resolutions, just had a play around with my setup and i couldn't get it to work myself. also did some trawling through the nvidia forums and it appears that it cannot be done, the only way to keep different resolutions apparently is in Dual View mode with each screen set up independently.

You would think it would be possible to do.  They have all of these gadgets on the video cards, mutli view , extended desktops, etc...and all I want is a simple video out signal and it can't be done.  :)

Thanks for the help on the matter.
