Question

Screen goes dark (not black) with resolution change

Asked by: bmlbytes

I had just built a new computer for myself. I got it working and everything was OK. I went  into the display settings and changed the resolution. My screen went dark. Almost as if the backlight just shut off (do CRTs have backlights?). I can still see the screen but everything is really dark. The screen was working until I changed the setting. I tried to adjust the controls for brightness/contrast on the monitor but they were all locked. The options won't let me unlock it (although there is a lock/unlock feature). When I try it on another computer the screen remains dark. Is there any way to fix this.

Monitor: Sony Trinitron Multiscan 200GS (Model CPD-200GS
Processor: Intel Pentium D 3.0GHz (Dual-Core)
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 5200 PCI (Not PCI-Express)
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista RC1

Please dont comment and tell me how bad my video card is.

Can you get into safe mode. If the same problem exists in safe mode, I would be looking at the video card being bad(sorry) or the CRT itself is bad.

if you know your way in electronics, you can try to repair it, otherwise you'll need another screen

...it looks like the electron cathode in hte tube is not emitting enough; but it can also be due to a setting, or bad contact; try tapping it gently from all sides, and exercise all controls

Do you have a spare monitor to try on your computer?  If that works then your CRT is bad.

>> When I try it on another computer the screen remains dark

The "it" refer to the monitor or the CPU ?? if the "it" refer to the monitor, which mean you move the monitor to another CPU to test for it, but the results is the screen remains dark, that could be your monitor break down already.

In another side, if the "it" refer to the CPU, which mean you switch your CPU to a new monitor to test for it, but the results remain the same (screen still dark) which mean is your graphic card problem, you might need to check whether you pluged in the video card probably or not ...... make sure the video card can be detected by the computer .......
