Question

Desktop PC rebooting when PC Speaker beeps one or more times!

Asked by: LeeGolding

Hi friends,

I have a PC with a Jetway V400DBL motherboard. A couple of years old now. It has a good spec and no other problems whatsoever except I had to replace the power supply a few months ago due to a failing fan.

However, when the PC Speaker beeps the PC will reboot! I have used PC Check software to test the speaker and after 2-3 beeps the PC reboots.

I've tried event log checking, System -> Advanced -> write error to log stuff, latest and stable hardware drivers, software is nice and tidy, fully tested all hardware fine. HWDoctor is monitoring temperatures, voltages, etc and everything is fine.

Anyone know what this is and if its related to the motherboard, etc?

Thanks,

Lee.

Is this just when it boots or is it after the OS is running?  If it's after the OS is running, I am not totally sure.

But, first I would try blowing all dust out of the case with compressed air.  Sometimes the dust in the case can jump a circuit on the mobo and cause random reboots.

Also, are you sure the new power supply isn't going bad?  Usually in a auto-reboot situation it is likely to be the mobo or the power supply (since all your drivers are up to date).  But I would try cleaning first just to check if it's that simple.

Hope this helps...

Weird, and I suspect the moterboard. So cleaning would be a good first step as well as checking all the conectors and cabling.

When did this start happening ?
Any added software ?

Did you check for malware using Hijackthis Ver 2 or similar ?

I hope this helps !

Hi guys,

No spyware, viruses, 100% sure. I've worked in IT for years and know most of the stuff. But with the one I'm stumped :-(

It reboots when the OS is running, completely out of the blue, seems to be when any software or the OS signals the PC Speaker to beep. Sounds like a motherboard, dust, PSU, or main power supply problem.

Lee.

Lee, you have my sincere sympathy. =)

Here's another thought - you might try rewiring or resoldering the power button.  Could be a loose wire.

by: Trey32137Posted on 2007-06-06 at 16:23:14ID: 19229322

Is it just happening with the small integrated speaker on the motherboard or does it beep through a set of external speakers?

by: LeeGoldingPosted on 2007-06-06 at 18:17:46ID: 19229675

I know. I work from home on my computer and its causing some lost work :-(

Hmmm. Power button and loose wire. I'll take a look at that. But I wouldn't of thought it would beep and reboot if it was that?

The beep is from the speaker that is in the PC casing that is connected to some jumpers on the motherboard.

Disconnect the speaker temporarily  and see if it still happens.

> Disconnect the speaker temporarily  and see if it still happens. --- check this first, if not try to get some other power supply and if you tried this, the memory also check it but if you think the ram are ok and you think all hardware are ok... try to take it out the motherboard to your casing and power it up just to observed if theirs happening like grounding happened coming from your casing! :)

goodluck!

Sorry to sound stupid but what is grounding and how do I prevent it?

maybe your system is set to reboot on speaker signal - lol !
Grounding, is when some grounded meatl touches parts of the mobo, or add-on cards; a common failure with that is the mobo grounding on the mounting standoffs (if one too many mounted)
You can also try to tick the mobo around the speaker (if onboard) to check if it happens (could be a speaker that grounds the signal when operating - try another one then)

Am i correct that when you send a signal to the speaker it reboots ?

the speker beeps is when you play any sounds / songs ?? Or it is a sound that you didn't try to play ?? And base of your working experience in IT line, then I think you already check out for the comman issue ......

If the speker beeps with the sound you didn't try to play, I think that is just a warning / attention the CPU want to give you through the speakers.

>> > Disconnect the speaker temporarily  and see if it still happens.
So, the results I guess the problems still occur even you plug off the speakers (then that prove is not the speaker issue) .....

I've disconnected the speaker and will see if it locks up or reboots today. If it does, I will take out the motherboard, clean completely, check mounting points and try that.

Thanks so far,

Lee.

Right its been a few days and disconnecting the speaker has stopped the reboots I think. However, it has frozen twice since.

So I think the next step is to clean the case, motherboard, components, etc.

Thanks,

Lee.

Thanks for upgrading in here ...... ;) ..... We will wait till you clean out the case .... etc and the final results (whether the problems still occur after you did all of that) ......... Cheers ..... ;)

ALso you might try replacing the speaker, to see if this helps resolve the issue.

Another note. I ran PC Check and the speaker tested fine no reboot, now the speaker is disconnected.

and when it is connected? test with pc check

by: LeeGoldingPosted on 2007-06-15 at 05:11:43ID: 19291014

As in the original question, when tested with PC Check with speaker connected, the PC will reboot after 2-3 beeps.

so - i would use another speaker, it can be shorting the +5 V to earth, when in use.

>> As in the original question, when tested with PC Check with speaker connected, the PC will reboot after 2-3 beeps

Which software you are using to test for the speakers ?? May I know the name or where can I download and test for it ?? It looks like the software is conflict with the speakers ......

Sorry for the delay.

It was a combination of Zonealarm v7 and above, a dodgy speaker AND a dirty motherboard.

What a hassle it was finding all that out.

Thanks for the help, and avoid the new version of ZoneAlarm. I now use v6.x. But I am going off the program very quickly.
