finding xp driver for pci device on a Dell

I have gone from vista back to xp on a new dell desktop.  I have found all the drivers except the PCI Device Unknown.  I have no sound also.  Any idea what the device is or does and where can I find a driver.

PCI device unknown would tell me that it is sound card with extra functioniong hardware attached to it (ie modem blaster) Go to dell website, enter serial number or express code and it will tell you exactly what drivers you need. download aach and save to downloads folder, (you may want to renname thme as you dowenload them. Dell irks me with the naming convention of the drivers because how the hell do you know if xx1234 is a sound driver or video (soryy I was ranting) Anyway, download all the drivers for your unit and install, you cant go wrong

To identify your unknown device, try this:
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Information. Click on "components" and highlight "problem devices". Any hardware device with a driver problem will be listed here. Make a note of the PNP Device ID line of the entry. It will contain a Vendor number and a Device number (VEN. . . . DEV. . . .)
both four digits long.
Look up those numbers here:

http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php

This will tell you the manufacturer and the chip number.  First port of call is the manufacturer's website.  If no joy there, try a driver database like Driverguide:

http://www.driverguide.com/

Go to dell's support site, enter your machine TAG, it will list the drivers appropriate to your system and you can download them from their.

What model of dell desktop(model name and number)? Was it purchased with an add-in sound card(usually a sound blaster) or are you using the integrated sound?

You mention going from Vista to XP on a NEW Dell. Did the Dell come with Vista on it? What is the model of the PC? Did you find your drivers on the Dell site or elsewhere?

I'm 99% sure that the sound problem is the Microsoft High Definition Driver, in fact had the exact same issue today, we just purchased a number of new D630 with Vista native, however while repackaging for imaging with Windows XP Pro I noticed that the sound wouldn't install, it turned out that the download we had from Dell for the Sigmatel HD Audio had a corrupt qfe.exe file ( The Microsoft High Definition Driver) Used one from the Dell D620 image I created once installed, we had sound.

So download the Driver RXXXXXX.exe from Dell
Use 7Zip or WinZip to Unpack
Search for qfe.exe and double click to install.
Reboot

With regards to the other devices, normally for a Desktop you only need to use/install the following drivers

Audio
ChipSet - This can sometimes hold drivers for Addon components
Network Card
Video

Of course ours are corporate machines so don't have anything additonal i.e. modems, with the exception of our Laptops.
