The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

USB Printers keep going offline

Tags: Acer, aspire desktop
Hi guys, After my computer has been turned off for the weekend, on monday when i turn it back on the printer is not grabbed as online, keeps showing offline in printers and faxes.  If i wait a little while and restart the computer a couple of times it will eventually find the printer and go online and print.  I have tried reloading the usb drivers, tried different usb ports, cables, printers.  I have reloaded the correct drivers and still nothing works.  Not sure where to go from here and neither is acer.  Any ideas

You may want to get a powered USB hub that maintains the connection.  The printer may have a power saving feature that turns circuits off if it doesn't detect anything connected to it.

In the device manager>USB Decvices, and do the following on all of the Root Hubs listed...

Properties>Power Management Tab>Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

I have already tried that as well as deleting them and reinstalling them, still the same problem.

Have you tried other ports?

Disable ALL power management in the desktop (standby, hibernate, HDD shutoff... EVERYTHING)..., and go from there?

test the printer on another pc, to be sure the printer is the cause or not

It was a printer that i was using on my pc and worked fine, tried other ports on the back and then moved to the front of the machine.  Would you guys just reinstall windows, i have seen some quirky stuff from acer in the past?  All power management has been disabled.

You can try removing the USB drivers in control panel and reboot - they will be reinstalled and no harm will be done.

This may be a silly question - and I know this is not the recommended way to do it - but: As a workaround, have you tried powering up the PC, waiting till all boot activity is done & then powering on the printer (or even waiting till then to plug in the USB cable)?

Do you mean that the printer was working OK until you moved it from one port to another & then this problem started? If not, can you tell us whether it has ever worked properly and if so what prompted it to start behaving this way?

I had the printer on my pc at the office and we were having this trouble with other printers and since my was fine HP 1022, i took it over to try and the same thing happens there.  He leaves the printer on all the time and turns the pc off friday afternoons.  Monday morning turns it back on and printer offline.  Can't force it online have to reboot, unplug usb, cross your fingers and maybe it will work.  The customer says that this started with the new pc install, (acer desktop).

Right, so logically you'd think the Acer is doing something odd on it's USB ports - and as you're not the end-user, my previous suggestion isn't very helpful :{{

The reason I made the suggestion is that I've seen similar problems but not for a few years now. Early USB implementations were flakier than a Cadbury's Flake bar :}

Might help, maybe: In Device Manager, go to the View menu and Show Hidden Devices. Delete all the USB devices you find there - you will probably find multiple instances of printers: delete them all. Reboot the machine, let everything re-install & sort itself out; reboot again when it's all gone quiet.

Any chance that there is an Acer Power Management app taking over the power configs of the devices, from Windows?

No its an Acer issue - try having the USB printer off until the PC is fully booted.

Acer has issues with peripherals.

03.11.2008 at 02:08PM PDT, ID: 21100374
Thats funny when i called them they acted like they had no idea what it could be.  You don't think that they would fib to me do you?  Still looking into it.  Think i'm gonna swap it out with my homemade version and get it into the shop and check it out.

3 years of desktop support with acer laptops and desktops, using an acer laptop for a year - Don't be surprised by anything on an Acer anymore.

I once had to upgrade BIOS just to get SP2 installed - and the laptop was only 6 months old.

I know of Acer laptops that require a reboot if it goes into standby to get network connectivity back.

Acer are cheap for a reason - and their 1st lvl support staff are all just reading from a script so many do not have a higher level of knowledge and may not be aware of this issue that affects maybe only one model. Lie to you - no, not aware of this problem - possibly.

Have you tried turning the printer on after the PC has fully booted?
