The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Please verify my custom pc build will go smoothly?
Tags: TigerDirect, Custom PC build, various (see question)
Can anyone forsee any problems with the following proposed custom build? Anything I'm missing and will smack my forehead after it all arrives? This isn't meant to be a gaming PC. Just a normal pc for basic business work, running windows xp. I'm satisfied with the onboard video for now and of course there's room for a better PCI-E card in the future.

Case: Power Up Black ATX Mid-Tower Case with 450W PSU

OR - the more expensive, better reviewed, but lower PSU wattage case:

Basic 120mm Case Fan
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1862464&sku=S457-1054

Motherboard: Asus P5GC-MX/1333 Motherboard
(what the heck is up with the ide header?)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3584478&CatId=2012

CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.20ghz
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=3584153&sku=CP2-PD-E2200

Basic CPU FAN: Masscool 8W501B1M3G
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1272112&CatId=1588

Memory: Kingston 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory (2 x 1024MB)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2175881&CatId=2366

Hard Drive:  Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, SATA-300
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2928334&sku=TSD-250AAKS

Basic SATA cable kit:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=504523

CD/DVD Drive: LG GSA-H55N combo drive (IDE) (I've got cables for this already)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3290824

Total price before tax / shipping comes to: $426.91

Anything glaringly obvious I'm missing? Incompatible case/mobo/cpu combination? Lack of cables, wrong size fan, wrong kind of memory etc?

My other question is - if I were to put in a good vista-capable PCI-E video card and put windows vista premium w/ aero on the computer instead.... what would happen? Would it slow to a crawl or still be reasonably okay?

i don't see problems, but you might check the power youi need, to see if 450 W is comfortable :

Looks like my absolute worst case scenario - with video cards, lots of usb devices drawing power, extra hard drive and cd drive, extra fans, an extra pci-e device, and 40% capacitor age is 467 watts.

When I configure it the way the computer will *actually* be, it's more like 187 watts =) so I think I'm good.

What about the case? Which one would you recommend?

the 450 W one seems very light (see comment)  but if that is no problem, it should be ok
for the rest, they seem the same to me

Everything seems to be in check with it, you shouldn't have to buy the sata cables though, as your mobo comes with a set.

Good call. I didn't see that.

Okay, I'll go ahead and order the parts and cross my fingers then! Nobus, I guess I'll get the light case. So long as everything fits in it I'm happy.
