PC will not boot with original hard drive

A friend brought me his PC (Gateway 500GR) as it will not boot (loud CPU fan) and orange light on front instead of blue. I am no expert but I tried removing keyboard and RAM to see if I would get POST beeps.  PC does not beep and no video.  I wanted to see if his hard drive would boot in my PC so I unplugged my hard drive (Dell Dimension 4700) and connected his HD to my PC.  It started booting but asked for Windows Product Activation. I did not go through with it because I did not want to mess up my PC. This tells me his hard drive is OK, right?  But then I connected my HD to his PC and it started booting up also (with blue light and CPU fan quieted) but asked for Windows Activation which I did not follow through.  Why did his HD boot in my PC but not in his own.  Also why did my HD boot in his PC? I hope thi s makes sense.  What could be wrong with his PC?Start Free Trial
