Question

Random Restarts

Asked by: leehewson

Hi, my computer has been randomly restarting over the last two weeks and I am puzzled as there is nothing in the event log to tell me why. My setup is as follows - all stock settings nothing fancy, I know the 4gb doesnt make a difference but i did consider vista at some point. Can anyone help?

WIndows XP SP3
Intel E6550 2.33ghz - Not overclocked
4gb Ram - not overclocked
Asus P5K motherboard - not overclocked
Asus ATI 3870 graphics card
Creative Sound card
500w PSU

I have ran WINDBG but get different reasons for the crash everytime. All the voltages seem ok, chkdsk picks up nothing - its very weird.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks Simon

so the caps on the motherboard are fine, next i would suggest trying another power supply. it could be not supplying steady power causing it to restart..

It can be PSU (already told), RAM (very common). motherboard (not only capacitors, sometimes You cannot see the damage with bare eye).

Well, from computer behavior (you've said, debugger shows different reason for crash every time) I'd guess it should be faulty RAM. Download and run Memtest.

by: nobusPosted on 2008-07-01 at 23:40:13ID: 21913961

you can also test your ram and disk, to be sure about the basics :
ram - use memtest86+ from www.memtest.org
disk - pick the one you need from :  http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

you can also test by running with 1 stick, then the other

you can also test if it happens in safe mode too

As you have 4gb Ram and not overclocked, and get different reasons from WinDbg for the crash each time, it certainly looks as if you have a suspect RAM(and i effectively agree with VTomukas).
If you wish for a quick result, i suggest you remove all RAM sticks except one, & retest.  If no improvement, try with one of the other sticks, and so on ...

if all the suggesstion above failed then bring out the motherboard and wash it with menthylated spirit or fuel using a pointed mouth brush after which u leave it to dry up. then couple it back n see .

i guess it will work cos i have fixxed a lot of hanging n freezing problems through eashing of board.

Hi All
Ran memtest for 12 hours and no errors detected. WinDbg points the errors to various things such as NTOSKRNL.EXE, ATI3DUAG.DLL, HIDCLASS.SYS

Is there any program I can run that will monitor things in the background?

Cheers Simon

by: JonveePosted on 2008-07-05 at 04:18:02ID: 21936636

As you ran Memtest for 12 hours it may still be beneficial to remove all RAM sticks except one, & retest, as suggested previously.   In my opinion there is no RAM Tester that guarantees finding a problematic RAM, although it does offer some guidance.

Also, if WinDbg points the errors to various components, this is also a sysmptom of faulty RAM.

To monitor your background tasks suggest you run Process Explorer version 11.13:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx
You can double click an offending file, if you see one. Then select the Services tab to see what services are in use by a particular .exe file.

by: JonveePosted on 2008-07-05 at 04:22:44ID: 21936645

<sysmptom>  should read  <symptom>

If you still have the problem after following all of the suggestions above, another suggestion would be to run Trend HijackThis 2.02:

Hi All

I think i have solved the issue. it looks like the auto voltage in the BIOS was not supplying enough juice - i have set this at 2.1v and all works perfectly since the change. I will montor this and get back to you.

Cheers Simon

this points to bad components on the moterboard; so be sure you have a backup ready.
it can fail every day, but also run like that for months
