The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

operating system issue with XP?

Asked by southerngentnclt in Personal Computers

Tags: "unable to create folder" error message in xp

I have made several attempts to install xp on a new 500 GB SATA hard drive in a dell dimension 5150. I have tried 2 different operating system cd's that came from dell with xp home sp2 and an unattended xp pro cd as well. The xp home installs windows perfectly and recognizes the hd as the right size. The XP pro unattended cd brings up the 137GB limitation and then formats the drive. In between each os install I wipe the drive clean using wipedrive from White Canyon Software. However, in each case here's what happens: I try to unzip the 10/100 pro network driver from the dell resource cd and it immediately asks the destination to unzip the file to....it then says the folder does not exist and asks if I want to create the folder....I answer yes and an error message comes back and says unable to create folder and I'm stuck. I have also downloaded the zip file to a cd-r, however, the exact same thing occurs. The only thing I can think of is that during the install process at the beginning I always see press F6 if you need to install a 3rd party driver, which I haven't done as I had zero luck getting any kind of response from Dell since the warranty period had expired. All I wanted to know was the manufacturer of the controller so I could locate the driver. I know xp apparently does not natively recognize SATA Drives...on my T60 lenovo laptop it was not a problem as the lenovo website automatically installed something called the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

So, 3 questions.......1) Does anyone think this issue might be related to this missing driver?   2) Since Dell is so uncooperative  how do I find the appropriate driver and then when you do press F6 and a list of controllers pops up how do I know which one to choose? and 3) Has anybody seen this message before and if it is not driver related does anyone have any theories?

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!
