The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

No DVD player in 64 bit Vista My Computer / Roxio problem ?

Asked by mgross333 in Personal Computers, Windows 64-bit, DVD Players & Recorders

I fix PCs for a living; this is for my customer, not my PC.

There is no DVD player showing in the 64-bit OS Windows Vista (My) Computer Window.

So following a modifed veresion of PUNKY's advice  at www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Desktops/PCs/Q_24540732.html?cid=239#a24767553

 (scroll down at that link)

YOU MUST READ ALL OF PUNKY'S POST TO CONTINUE WITH THIS QUESTION BECAUSE I AM NOT INCLUDING A LOT OF STUFF HERE AS IT IS ALREADY THERE.

Also a 64-bit version of iTunes **IS** installed on this PC.

(1) I rename UpperFilters (GEAR SW related entry) and LowerFilters (WHICH HAS A ROXIO APP RELATED ENTRY, namely "PxHelp20", NOTE THAT) to backup copy names (name does not matter) and reboot.

Problem is gone. BUT now iTunes (which uses GEAR SW drivers for CD access) causes errors and no CD access for iTunes.

(2) I recreate UpperFilters and copy contents of backup UpperFilters to it (has Gear SW entry) and the iTunes errors disappear and the DVD drive still appears in the Vista Computer Windows.

(3) I try the same thing with LowerFilters AND THE DVD DRIVE DISAPPEARS AGAIN IN VISTA COMPUTER WINDOW.

(4) I delete the CONTENTS of LowerFilters (not the entire LowerFilters entry) and we are back to situation in (2).

SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM ?

If you have followed what happened in (1) above, obviously NOW Roxio Media Creator (installed here) WILL NOT WORK BY ANALOGY !!  So we have replaced one problem with another !!

NOTE A GOOGLE SEARCH ON "LowerFilters PxHelp20" or just PxHelp20 shows that this registry entry is related to (principally) Sonic and Roxio CD/DVD SW (and Sonic now owns Roxio or Vive-versa). And Roxio Media Creator **IS** installed on this PC.

PLEASE REPLY WITH YOUR SOLUTION from the list below

(1) The Roxio app came with the Sony VGC-JS100 (also called PCG-2F1L) PC; Sony is out to lunch and installed a 32 bit app on a 64 bit OS PC. PLEASE PROVIDE A LINK TO A 64-BIT OS VERSION OF ROXIO (my customer is wealthy and will just uninstall the 32 bit version and pay for the 64 bit version of Roxio Media Creator.

(2) Just run Roxio it will work fine; the LowerFilters entry is not even needed.
NOTE: I have deliberately NOT done that as I am afraid that will screw things up again and I will not get paid. Now, I know that uninstalling and reinstalling Roxio would probably be needed to repopulate the LowerFilters entry, not just running Roxio BUT I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THE CHANCE ***UNLESS** AN EE EXPERT HERE TELLS ME THAT ROXIO DOES NOT NEED THAT REGISTRY ENTRY TO WORK.

I consider (2) VERY UNLIKELY TO BE TRUE AS iTunes (depending on a Gear SW driver) did NOT work when I deleted the UpperFilters entry.

(3) Some other solution you will provide here.

THE GOAL IS TO HAVE SOME VERSION OF ROXIO MEDIA CREATOR WORK and of course, the DVD drive shows up in the Vista Computer Window.

I need a solution BEFORE I return onsite at 1:30 PM Sunday July 5, so asking me to Run Roxio and see what happens IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE REPLY HERE.  This is not my PC and I can provide no more info BEFORE I go on-site.

Mike .
