I have a Dell Optiplex GX 270. I am putting a new drive in and installed memory. When booting up I get this message that says that Memory has changed and "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility." If I press F1 I get the same message again. If I hit F2 and go into setup I can see the HDD drive and the memory but when rebooting I still get the same message. I have taken the memory out and still now I get the same message. Their was not problem with the PC befor this. Just needed to add a larger HDD and add Memory. I could use some help with this. I have to have it up and going before Monday morning. THANKS!!

Are you using the correct Master setting (Master-Single ----- Master with Slave Present)?
It looks like it came with a 40GB drive. It might not be able to see a drive over the 137GB limit.
See if there is a bios update that says it fixes this.
As a test, can you set the WD jumpers to limit the drive to 137GB?

How much ram did you install? The Dell Optiplex GX270 is only capable of recognizing 4GB. XP (32 bit) will only show 3GB. That is normal.
If you are trying to put in more than 4G, your error messages might be understandable.
Have you updated to the latest version of the BIOS? That model of computer is older than 500G drives I think. A new BIOS might do the trick for the RAM and the HDD.
I checked the BIOS update and it's current. The memory was not the issue. I could see the drive in the setup but could not get past the F1. I took out the drive and hooked it up externally to another machine. The drive would not read. I checked in the Administrative Tools in the computer management and looked at the disk. It would see the disk but not allow it to be seen as a usable disk. I activated the drive" and formatted NTFS. Maybe this is normal, but I have never had to activate a drive before. This one stumped me. It did look like the jumpers might be off or a bad cable or even the board, except the other drive still works fine. Has anyone ever had to activate a drive using the admin tools? I could not even format until I activated it.
is that Activate, or initialise? initialise happens often, it means it is not formatted in a format windows can read; never saw activate, but maybe there is other software that caused it.

Thanks for the input, I have already loaded the OS and apps. And it was Activate not initialise. That's what threw me. Because it's not even grayed out in computer mangement on my system now. Only when I installed this disk did that option appear in disk management. What was diff also was that before I activated it, it showed all 500gb of disk in disk management.

while in the setup, turn on [num lock] [caps lock] and [scroll lock] lights.
press [ctrl] [alt] [E] a couple of times and it will beep. This resets the plugnplay
press [ctrl] [alt] [F] and it will beep again. This resets the fixed disk autodetect.
If those don't make the error go away, you might try memory diagnostics.
