Question

no sync to monitor after hardware upgrade

Asked by: sledge

The mainboard on my computer died recently so I went out and bought a mew MB, processor and ram. After installing the new hardware, I reconnected my old H.D., DVD, A drive and graphic card.
On booting, all the fans start up but I get no start-up beep from the computer and the monitor says 'no sync'

anyone any ideas?

I've unplugged everything but H.D. ram and monitor. Still same result.
I've tried both my old graphic card and the onboard graphics card.
Could it be the P.S? it's 350watt

calculate the power you need : http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine
Here my troubleshooting procedure :
with a new motherboard : verify if all mounting standoffs correspond with the holes in the mobo !!
Or test the mobo ouside the case, on a wooden  (non conductive) surface
clean the system from dust, then  test with the minimum setup - disconnect also all peripherals and network cables :
connect only  motherboard + cpu + 1 ram stick, video card, power supply
verify that the 4-pin or 8-pin CPU Aux power plug is connected
on boot, do you have a display?
if NO it is one of the connected, swap ram, Power supply, video card or monitor - leaving only motherboard and cpu
if Yes, add devices till the problem shows

you can also check the motherboard for bad capacitors as shown here :   www.badcaps.net

additional tests and things to try :
boot without ram, it should beep; (also, without video card)
try bios default settings,(if possible) or clear the bios by removing AC and bios battery
renew the CPU heatpaste

the standoffs are ok. the ram was taken out of a fully working pc. The monitor is new and works on another system.

As i say, no beep on startup, just fans going.
I'll give your other suggestions a try.

Thanks for quick reply

try to reset ur bios using jumper and removing battery.

first u need to trouble shoot with onboard display...

cross check ram on another pc is working or not. and using Microsoft memtest utility.

check for 4 pin ATX power connection on motherboard proper connetion.

try with single ram in u have more than one ram installed.

Are you sure you connected the  CPU Aux Power Plug (4-pin or 8-pin) Nobus mentioned above?

My first thought is the Mb is bad.  DOA boards are a definate reality these days, granted this doesn't happen too often, but it does happen.  My second thought is the RAM you installed is incompatible with the board.

If you remove the memory it should beep (complaining that it is missing the memory).

If you have removed everything as suggested above, leaving only the video and power supply this will leave your variables reduced to these components.

Most barebones cases come with insulating washers....some motherboards actually need to close the ground through the standoffs and the insulated washers prevent this from happening causing all sort weird behaviours.

did you follow my troubleshooting guide closely ?

by: ilnycPosted on 2009-09-21 at 06:16:33ID: 25382489

My understanding is that upon powering up, there is no beep nor any POST message.   If that is the case, the most likely reason is the PC is not put together properly.  I'd check:

1. if there are any loose metal objects stuck underneath the MB, creating a short between the MB and case.

2. if all connectors are plugged in at the right places and securely connected.  Especially check the auxilary connections, USB, audio and firewire, are connected to the right place.  Some mobo allow that they can be plugged in to the wrong pins.

You're welcome..... so if your power supply was not powerful enough.... why did you not assign the points to nobus?
