cdrw and hard drive IDE connectivity

I have an Abit SA7 motherboard, western digital 20 gig hard drive, and a Lite-on 40x cdrw drive running windows XP. Is it possible to connect the hard drive to the primary IDE and the burner to the secondary IDE using 2 seperate IDE cables? I tried doing this but the cdrw will only be recognized as a cd drive and not a burner (i can use the drive just fine to install games and such but i cant burn anything because its not recognized as a burner) Does it HAVE to be daisy chained to be recognized as a burner or do i connect the burner to the primary and the HD to the secondary. I do not want to daisy chain them together if possible i want to use a seperate IDE cable for each one. any help would be appreciated thank you :)
