Tweaking my video

I have an MSI GeForce4 Ti4200 installed in my computer, but I'm only getting 20-30 frames per second on games such as Half-Life, Counter-Strike and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, which use OpenGL.  At some high-action points, I get below 15 FPS.  I've talked with other people on the games with Ti4200s, and they've been getting at least double the performance. I even talked with a person using a GeForce2, and he's getting a constant 60 FPS.  Even with all details set on low, my FPS stays the same.  Are there any options I can tweak?

System Specs:
-AMD Athlon XP+1800 (It's running at 1.2 GHz to cut down on voltages until I get a better power supply.)
-ASUS A7N266-VM Motherboard
-512 MB PC 2100 DDR SDRAM
-350-Watt Power Supply
-MSI GeForce4 Ti4200 64 MB DDR Video Card (Running with OpenGL 1.4, plus NVIDIA Detonator Driver 40.72)(Monitor Settings: 800x600, 16-bit color, 85 Hz refresh)
-Onboard Dolby 5.1 Sound
-56K Modem for Connection (I'm pinging at 150-160 on most servers, highly unlikely that's affecting performance)

Please respond asap....!

Make shure in the bios you have agp 4x enabled. Set agp apature to 64 or 128.  Look for things like  Agp sideband enable Agp fast write enable.
also make sure that all you anti aliasing and anistropy are set to off these make games look beautifull but at a high performance cost (my ti4600 with no aa or anis can run at 300+ fps on 3d mark, but with it (4XS aa, 8x anis) it can drop to as low as 30 never peaking 100
other wise snowguy's plan should sort it, also try turning on//off any video ram shadows or caching,
Why are you getting a new power supply?  350W is more than enough already.  I've run a whole slew of stuff on a 250-Watt and I've never once had a problem.

That and you should be careful with sidebanding...it can cause more problems than performance.  Also if you are using Win2k...that could be the problem

Well, I'm using Windows 98, and the sideband option is disabled...AGP 4x is enabled, plus all anisotropic and antialiasing options are off.  Also, my card doesn't have any options to change ram shadows, caching, or AGP aparture in the bios or in the card settings.  I have DirectX 8.1; would upgrading to 9 help at all?
Try The 41.09 driver.
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=win9x_41.09
Have you installed the agp motherboard chipset driver?

The only thing I can find in your MB manuel that may help in the bios. Is changing the video memory cach mode to [uswc]
OK...I downloaded the 41.09, set it to USWC, and found an option for the AGP apature (changed it to 128).  There's still no difference...anything else I can try?
there is a possiblilty that the card may be faulty, try putting in a different card, if the massive performance loss is still noticeable then there might be a problem with ur mobo, if not then the card may be busted, try running the processor at normal capacity and see if that makes a difference, also check that your mobo jumper for fsb is set to 133/266 (if ur usin 266 cpu n ram, not 100/200) not much more i can think of sorry, let me know how u get on,
if ur power supply is on its way out (doubt it coz ur system doesnt randomly hang) then that may cause problems if the componens arent getting the required voltage consistantly, have you replaced your motherboard recently?
if so make sure all old chipset drivers have bin uninstalled, there could be a conflict, check device manager (right click my computer properties) for any components showing up wih question marks next to em,
is the problem only in opengl games? or is it present in d3d as well,
run halflife/cs in 1024x768 d3d and see how it reacts,
I have an Okia power supply that came with the case (nice case, but not an AMD-certified supply.)  I'm thinking of getting that changed soon, because my computer always rebooted itself when I had the CPU running at 1.5 GHz.  I guess I'll get a new supply and see how that works out.
Also, the problem is in Direct3D as well.  I've run CS in d3d at 800x600 and I'm still only getting 20-30 FPS.  Maybe this supply is the solution, but if there's any other comments from anyone, feel free to post....
possible cpu problem if its rebooting at full potential, or your heatsink is not adequate, try running at full speed with a bios temp guard to warn u of overheat (70 deg should be ample for average flux)
if an alarm goes off then you may wish to get a new heatsink, might be worth tryin anyway, only a few bob
Another thing...Direct3D does run about 5-10 fps more, which I need for games such as Medal of Honor.  I've seen on some sites that you can change the configuration to run MOH in Direct3D instead of its native OpenGL driver, is that possible?

Actually it isn't running on a VIA chipset:
North Bridge: NVIDIA 220D
South Bridge: NVIDIA N-Force MCP-D
the graphics card is scaled by the processor capacity, how did you change the speed of the chip? did you kill off the fsb, if so that may be your problem, didnt think of that b4
make sure agp apperature is 64meg+ etc
It's all good now, I figured everything out.  I just had to reinstall my nForce drivers...I never would've thought of that before TardBoy brought it up.  I more than doubled my 3DMark2001 score, from 2700 to 8100!  Thanks, everyone!
