Question

cmos problem

Asked by: jgruschow

I have a MSI kt3 6380 E motherboard with an Athlon 2000+ CPU
I noticed my machine was running slower and after investigating I found my FSB was set to 100. It has always been 133.
I entered my cmos setup and first thing I noticed was my time and date where wrong. I corrected them and then found I could not save them and I could not exit setup. Pressing Esc did nothing. The only exit was via power switch. Restarted and noticed time and date were still correct.
I navigated to FSB settings and raised speed to 133. Again I could not save and could not turn page. Only exit was power switch.
FSB was back at 100.
What do I do next? I might add comp. has never been overclocked.

You may want to try clearing the cmos via the jumper.
Then reset the cpu speed and multiplyer.
I was trying to see if thier is a bios update for your motherboard but the msi site is not working.

OK to remove the battery and let it self clean. Even with glasses my eyesight is not up to jumpers.
Also further info. System Restore has disappeared from my computer. The option to restore is just not there.
Just started this morning, after a reboot I get a card on screen that says "The service has not been started". No mention of what service. Everything seems to be working.,but slower than normal.

Are you running an Antivirus Program?
How do you connect to the internet? (ie. are you behind a firewall?)

by: jgruschowPosted on 2003-04-05 at 19:53:03ID: 8277438

Useing Norton 2002 AV all up to date. Dial up Connection. No firewall. No network.
Have cleaned out cmos and reset everything one at a time and then used F10 to get out of setup. Esc does exactly nothing in setup. no way of exiting or turning page.

Hello,

Try putting in a new CMOS battery. It surely is not going to be too expensive. Just make sure that it is exactly same as the old battery(the number, brand, volts and size etc)
That should hopefully let you change and also save the BIOS setting as you wish to.

Hope that this helps. GoodLuck.

by: SnowguyPosted on 2003-04-06 at 07:24:49ID: 8278666

I would do as Arjun1 has suggested replace the battery with the same type. I also would suggest running this free on line virus scan. I have seen norton and others miss some virus.

Have you tried Flashing the BIOS?  Maybe part of it has become corrupt.
**Warning, if the PC is disturbed (ie. unplugged) durring the flash the MB can become unuseable, no one can fix it.

BIOS available at:
http://65.68.55.12/inetpub/ftproot/bios_microstar.htm
  Two thirds of the way down the page too;
16888 / 16889 6380 E-060  KT3 ULTRA-2 5.6
  Or click on this link
  http://65.68.55.12/inetpub/ftproot/Files/BIOS/Microstar/6380E%20K7T266%20PRO2A/6380ev56.exe
You can select OPEN, unless you want to save the download.
(when the file downloads it will ask where to put the files, you will have to change the top line to something simple, like  c:\newbios

There are complete instructions on the flash process included with this download.

Almost sounds like a stick of memory is no longer up to par and refuses to run at the 133Mhz speed.

If you have more than one piece of memory, try running your system with only one piece and set your FSB to 133 and see if you can save and exit CMOS like that.  If you can, then take out that piece of memory and try the other stick (and so on---one at a time) until you find the memory that will no longer run at 133.

Successfully flashed bios. Checked memory. No change.

you could try removing all peripherals and see if that stops the CMOS from locking up. Maybe even remove any unnecessary internal cards to see if that improves anything. If you can, choose 'load BIOS defaults' or 'load setup defaults' and save. On restart go back in and change anything you need to back to what it needs to be. If you can't get into it to load defaults you can use the bios flash program to reset the bios to factory defaults.

Hello,

Indeed taking out all the peripherals (like NIC,and drives that are not needed immediately, sound Card, modem etc) sort of takes the computer to its basics. Then boot up the compouter and see if you can change all that in the BIOS you want to and as you want to. Then try saving it as you tried before. Like selecting the correct FSB of 133 Mhz and of course saving it. Then Save/Reboot normally.

If the BIOS boot details now seen, shows the proper CPU speed. Then you are on the right track. Also check, just for the sake of it the othger details in BIOS to see if anything else is out of th ordinary.
Then ease in the peripherals one by one, the NIC, the Sound Card, the modemand then of course the Drives one by one.

Hopefully this time round, the computer would work normally.

Keep your fingers crossed. Mine are already crossed. :>)

Hope that this helps.

Everything is now reset and comp is working normaly, except the esc key.
So I bought a new keyboard. Just a standard keyboard. It claimed on the box it was for win 98, ME ,2000 and XP.
I plugged it in and tried three restarts. My system refused to recognise it. Eventualy on rebooting I got messages "Wrong Cmos settings" Press Fl to enter setup.
HOW DO YOU DO THAT WITHOUT A KEYBOARD.
Next thing Cmos opened on it's own and it had been reset to default.
Rebooted again and still no keyboard.
I re-installed my old keyboard and things are working normaly again, except no esc key and now the number one key doesn't work.
It looks like my keyboard is overdue for replacement.
I will return the new board to the store this morning and try another one. Any comments???
