Question

Hard drive functions as slave, not as master!?

Asked by: l_dowell

Have just aquired an upgrade computer, want to transfer hard drive from present PC to new PC and use it as master/boot drive as there are hidden licence files, etc., in place on it. The drive already in new PC will function as a slave. Original drive is 6G Samsung SV0643 with Win98 and new is 34G Western Digital WD400 with Win2000. When configured as master, either solo or paired with the 34G, pc (Compaq Presario 5000) goes through post, and scsi init and where win2000/dpi pool splash screen should appear it freezes. If the 34G is set as master, all boots are fine. The 6G drive is correctly recognized by the bios in all cases as is the 34G drive, but the 6G won't boot. Access to the drive is heard just at the moment where the splash screen should appear, access LED lights and stays on. I'm totally stumped, can't find any info' at Samsung or Compaq that helps. Thanks for any and all help.

Have you set the 6gb as a slave? If it doesnt work, Format and partition you 6gb Hard Drive. It should work as a slave if you set the jumpers right, and connect it to the same IDE port as the master.

by: navaspyPosted on 2003-04-14 at 20:53:35ID: 8331222

The reason it must be doing this is because of the current boot files on the 6GB drive. So Formatting and PArtitioning it should clear those files out.

I quess I didn't make it clear, but the 6G drive boots fine in the computer from which it came. It still boots when I put it back in that box. When its put into the new box, either by itself (even the CD's have been disconnected in some of my testing) or paired is when it can't get past the post-up.

Try to go to the BIOS setup.

Then set to Auto-detect Hard Disk.

GOODLUCK!

Thats all part of the boot up, if the 6gb is the slave, and the splash screen hangs while reading the 6gigabyte, you chould clear up that drive. Is there anything important on it? Back it up on your 34GB. THen format and partition.

by: navaspyPosted on 2003-04-14 at 22:58:50ID: 8331622

Does it work fine with the 34gb alone?
if yes, then its safe to say that the problem is with the 6gb. And the files on the 6gb is the problem. It's supposed to boot with the 34gb, but its confused because it's trying to boot the o/s from the 6gb. I can guarantee up to 99.9% that formatting and partitioning the 6gb will work.

I agree with the assesment that the problem is with the 6G drive, but the rub is that there is infomation in the registry of that drive I can't just copy across to another drive. One of my important progs has a license file buried somewhere on the drive and/or registry, and I don't have the ability to reinstall the prog'. I've got to transfer it. A format wipes out files I can't lose. The 6G drive boots fine in it's original box, but not in the new one when set as master or even solo. I'm coming to the conclusion that there is clearly a compatability issue with this drive, but it beats me as to what it is.  Compaq has washed their hands of it, haven't heard anything yet from Samsung, and I'm not holding my breath there.
Having typed and reread what I just wrote, how dangerous would copying the registry across be? Certainly risky at best, probably a MAJOR if not stupid mistake. It's win98 vs. win2000, etc.,etc. Not something I think is worth consideration.

by: navaspyPosted on 2003-04-15 at 00:28:06ID: 8331932

what are these registry files?

by: brakk0Posted on 2003-04-15 at 14:46:54ID: 8336974

Make sure the drive is set to master and not cable select. also try connecting it to the other connector on the cable or another cable alltogether.

If that doesn't work, you can get a copy of norton ghost or another drive imaging software and image it onto the new drive and boot from that.

The problem is, that even if you do get it to boot, if you don't reinstall windows after putting it into a new machine, you are going to have all kinds of problems. You might be able to work around some, but it will never run like it's suposed to.

If this drive is a Western Digital, simply remove the jumpers all together and try to see of it gets detected in the BIOS. Don't hook up any other drives.

Let us know if this works.

Mirfster.

           So both work by themselves....
is your computer set up too boot dual
operating systems??? U are dealing with 2
         different os's 2000 and 98.

U said your 6 worked in the other puter
so your problem might not be the hard
        drive.

Like was said before do a backup of
all your files on the 6 and restore it
       too the 34gb.....

If that don't work and your desperate you
might try a transfer program made just for this
       kinda problem like..

          http://www.spearit.com/about_MoveMe.html

and transfer all your files for that
program to the new hard drive ........

This particular program moves registry settings
as well as system settings ...............

If the 6 works in one and not the other
check all your cables for the drive

IDE , POWER ....  check your jumper settings
            BIOS SETTINGS.......

IF YOUR 6 WORKS IN AT LEAST ONE
              ITS NOT BROKE..DAMAGED MAYBE.UNLESS U
DAMAGED IT WHEN U MOVED IT.....

freezing up while booting can be many problems
but this sounds like one drive interferring
          with another which means........

         1. your computer is not set for dual boot os's
         2. your jumper settings are wrong
         3. power supply is not powerful enough
            too cool both drives......

you might wanna invest in a case fan
and a really good power fan......

          I put a second hd in mine with a cd-rom and cd-rw
and mine did stuff like yours..Long story
short I put in a Case fan.......

I now have four fans   power..case..processor..video
          and I'm runnin smooth

So check your hd's when their both in...
Feel if their hot....  If you dont need
too stack em right on each other Don't

             HOPE SOME OF THIS HELPS

FEEL FREE TOO CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG

I've come to the conclusion that its the 'operating system' on the 6G drive that's at fault. I think brakk0 hit it in the head with his comment about reinstalling the system.  Because I'm moving it into a new box, its dealing with a new hardware set, and prolly most important , a new motherboard. I honestly expected WinDoze to have detected this(don't laugh TOO hard), but I'm believing its just getting totally lost and can't proceed while trying to detect rudimentary stuff. I'm debating whether or not I want to reinstall win98 on it while its in the new box. I have some desire to leave the original box bootable as a backup, or perhaps a remote on a small network. In the meantime, thanks for any and suggestions.
