Question

Help! Problem Booting up computer!

Asked by: albertgates

I recently replaced my amd slot A motherboard becuase it fried. So I installed this new used motherboard I got from a friend and everything booted up fine until it got to the harddrive, it said invalid system disk. So I booted with my windows recovery diskette and typed "sys a: c:" to replace the system files. It helped the boot process continued however suddenly the computer would turn to the menu "Windows has shut down successfully, You can now shut down your computer" (Or something like that). So what's the problem? How Can I solve this? Thanks!

The problem is that the os when instaled configuered it to the slot a motherboard. And now it is having isues with the new board. The best thing to do is back up all your data and reinstall the os. This some times works boot to safe mode and remove what ever you can from device manager then reboot and let windows reinstall them. Dont forget to install the chipset drivers for the motherboard.

ok now it's serious!! I reinstalled windows and it says updating config files etc and it comes to a screen:

"Error loading atmsys.drv, you must reinstall windows" I just did that! and everytime I restart, it would go to that message. What do I do now??

by: SnowguyPosted on 2003-04-19 at 19:32:27ID: 8361425

Is this a new install (after format) or a install over the top of the old? I am guessing the later since.
ATMSYS.DRV is part of the Adobe Type Manager program.

No need to reinstall again, before the Win98 logo comes up when booting, press CTRL several times, until you see the Boot Menu.  Choose "Safe Mode command prompt only".  Then type:
cd windows
edit system.ini

Then find the line where it shows system.drv=atmsys.drv.  Put a semicolon in front of it.  So what you want to see is:

....blahblah...
;system.drv=atmsys.drv
system.drv=system.drv

Note there is no ; before the second one.  That should get it booted up again.  The problem is you reinstalled to the same directory and the Windows configuration files (win.ini, system.ini, and possibly parts of the registry) are hold-outs from the prior installation.  You could reinstall to a different directory (i.e. C:\Win98) instead to avoid this problem.

I agree, and to fix the motherboard drivers... sometimes u don't need to reinstall the OS.  Instead boot into safe mode, go into the device manager, and remove all the devices under the system devices tab.  When u reboot again, it should load into windows, and it should reconfigure itself for the new motherboard... although it may ask for a disk containing a driver depending.  I have only rarely seen problems occur after doing this, it's almost as good as reinstalling the OS in the case of swapping the motherboard.  Let me know what happens :)

In addition to RiGMiK's suggestion, there is another method as well.  instead of retyping it all again, check this thread and look towards the bottom where I comment on removing the ENUM key from the registry:
