The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Motherboard/CPU upgrade advice

I'm seeking advice on the MB/CPU combination I should upgrade to.

I have a 2 year old MB from ASUS with an AMD K-6 500Mhz CPU. This MB won't handle any faster CPU, so it's time to upgrade the MB/CPU without, I hope, replacing everything else inside the box. I'm running WinXP Pro. This machine currently contains the following hardware:

UMAX 1220S SCSI Scanner using SCSI adapter card
AIWA Bolt TD-A10 tape backup
CreativeAudio PCI128 Sound card
Lite-on LTR-16101B DVD/CDROM drive
nVidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400 video card
ViewSonic 21" monitor
256 MB DDRAM

I have two new hard drives to install:

- Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB ATA hard drive (primary)
- Seagate 20GB U series 5 hard drive wait (secondary - for data only)

I mostly do web development on this rig, but I do a lot of multi-tasking with, for example,  Outlook, DreamWeaver, HomeSite, Fireworks, Internet Explorer, all open at once. So while I don't need a gamer's screaming dream rig, I need something more than the average home user's desktop. I'm willing to upgrade the video or sound card if required.

So sound off and let me know what good value would be in a MB and CPU combination. I'm planning to purchase online.
