Question

Overclocking Issues!

Asked by: Tutalian

Hey there,

As many of you probably are, I am a major overclocker and just recently built myself a new system. Here are the specs:

Giga-byte GA-8iPE1000
P4 2.4GHz (400MHz FSB)
512MB DDR333 PC2700 Micron
80GB Maxtor HDD 8MB Cache
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

I have the video card overclocked (default: 398/600 o/c: 470/610). After doing this I have run 3DMark03 looping 3 times over and no problems. Now I want to overclock my CPU. I put it up to 2.53GHz and start to hear noise coming from the case (a sound similar to the scrolling matrix code from the movie). It only seems to make the noise when testing Point Sprites (3DMark 2001SE) and the NPR Hatching Demo from ATI. If I overclock the CPU some more then the noise gets louder on these demos. I can't hear where it is coming from. But the tests, such as 3DMark01, 03, work fine and no crashes. I have had the CPU up to 2.8GHz and no crashes. I clocked it back down because that noise does not sound healthy. Any suggestions to this noise? I have checked the temp on the CPU and runs constant at roughly 30c - 35c.

Thanks

Weird, have you tried opening the case to localize the sound source?
The only guesses I can make are expansion of some component due to heating causing some moving parts to make the noise or perhaps one of the fans speeds up to compensate?

If you can localize the source it will probably be apparent.

Cheers,

Gerry.

Well, it's (virtually) impossible for the CPU to make such a noise.  Most likely the noise is from a vibrating component (usually an inductor or transformer) in the POWER SUPPLY circuit on your motherboard near the CPU.  OFten you'll get one of these with a loose winding or that is poorly mounted to the board and it will vibrate under certain conditions and make this (often annoying) noise.

Why does it only do it when you overclock?  Well, as you overclock you cause the CPU to pull power power from the supply.  I'm guessing that only when the power level rises above a certain threshold does the vibration start.

There is little you can do to fix this yourself since the parts are very small and you need special tools to fix them.  Since it's new, I suggest returning it for an exchange.

It only makes this noise on those demos mentioned above. No other time. I can play UT2003 and no noises come out.

Although for the life of me I cannot remember what the scrolling code in the Matrix sounded like, I would say if it occurs during the running of only certain programs it could be one of a few things:

--Several times in the past certain programs caused my harddrive to be accessed in odd ways (I am assuming where the data is stored on the drive)

--Are you sure it's not comming out of your PC speaker or external speaker?  Could be that the program is making a noise.

Other than that I would say it is a fan or something that is about to go, but since you say it only occurs when you run the demo progz than I doubt it is one of those.

so this noise is only put out when your pc is pushed to the limmits. i have to first say doing that over and over is bad for the parts and the board. So if you want to risk overclocking i would not push your luck by testing it with those domo's cause you could push it too far just 1 time and fry it and not be able to fix it. If the problem does'nt appear with normal usage than you've not overclocked your pc into the danger zone and it is still useable. if you start toi hear tham on a reg basis then i would say tune down your pc cause those parts are only made to go soo fast.

After some further testing I have concluded that the sound is coming from the Radeon. I went into 3DMark 2001 SE and turned off Hardware T&L and ran the Point Sprites benchmark. No noise whatsoever happened. But the noise is only gets louder when overclocking my CPU. I think this is because the AGP voltage is also being o/c. I am going to try and turn on linear o/c and see if this keeps the AGP voltage at default.

Any more suggestions will be nice.

Thanks

Well sound can only be caused by vibration, so if its from the Radeon then either the card (or a component on it) is resonating or the fan mechanism is.

If you are game, you could (taking all necessary ESD precautions) try touching the edge of the card while its 'humming' to see if this dampens the vibration and thus the noise. Likewise you could CAREFULLY do the same for the fansink.
