>>WANT THE BEST VALUE AND BEST FEATURES

Those are often mutually exclusive requirements!  Further, you've not said what features are important to YOU! What is your meaning of "value"??  What is your budget?  How do you intend to use this thing?

by: write2mohitPosted on 2003-08-03 at 07:21:32ID: 9060994

I want all the latest features... but there are sooo many companies offering same features.. Like DELL, GATEWAY, TOSHIBA and some like Custom Made Laptops.

See I want all the gear and gadgets in my notebook.... and I am looking to spend not more than 3500 CANADIAN DOLLARS.

So which is the best notebook for my money...

Thanks

you'll probably get the best deal off of ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3425079275&category=42204

you can of course search for one that might better fit your needs

i generally look for the "buy it now" laptops (you can even search for only "buy it now" listings) and treat these like "for sale" items, not "auctioned" items.

by: write2mohitPosted on 2003-08-03 at 09:15:05ID: 9061933

Ebay items don't have guranteee

I would prefer to buy directly from manufacture or a retailer that too probally be canadian.

I want to know which notebook is the best value for my money in the market and why I should buy it, over others.

write2mohit, it's not an easy question to answer, it depends on many things:  such as do you prefer Intel or AMD?  Do you prefer a touchpad?  What size hdd do you need?  Do you have need for CDRW?  DVDRW?  Do you play games?  Are there some brands you prefer to others?

That being said, if it were my money, and I had around $3500 to spend I'd buy the toshiba Satellite 5200.  Ive seen it priced as low as $3,299 in Canada right now.  (I'm in Calgary, FYI)

Here's a write-up and toshiba's URL: http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en&section=1&group=1&product=878

The Satellite 5200 also features a miniature card sized remote control hidden in the lifestyle compartment,
and a faster Pentium 4, 2.2GHz-M, 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 FX5600, allowing entertainment control on
the 15 inch UXGA screen with Superfine technology with 400:1 contrast ratio (other notebooks only have
250:1)and C-Pad with calculator function right on the touchpad. The C-Pad glows with the Green Backlight,
and the mini-LCD also glows electric blue when the remote control is activated! This notebook also offers
the ability to enjoy wireless 802.11a&b at home or on the road. Every luxury is maxed out as a standard.
The 5200 is not like any other notebook computer you've seen! It is a total entertainment unit, with
Television quality screen, Harman Kardon sound system, and DVD player plus DVD rewritable!

As far as why I recommend it over some others:  The processor, though not as fast as some others, should be MORE than adequate for anything you do.  The Video is the best available in a laptop righ tnow.  The monitor is beautiful, it really is.  It's also one of very few notebooks to offer a DVD-RW at any price.

Oh yeah, and if you do watch DVD's on it (say in a hotel room, like I do with mine) it has extremely good sound quality.

Hope that helps,

AB

Thanks AlbertaBeef

Your opinion was helpful, but I do need some more opinions before making my decision.

As I am giving this question high priority of 500 points , so cannot make my mind right away

Also as the part of this question, please don't mind if I argue with you. I mean debating.

As its a matter of 3500 dollars and I want to make right decision and get best value for my money.

Ok the Toshiba 5200, sounds reallly goood.... but some of the features which I think is useful but not that common yet.

I am refering to DVD writer in that... As I know the speed will be MAX 4X, or might be 2X, not more than that....

So basically whats the point of having DVD writer, if its tooo slow... and the battery life is about 3 hours average.... which is OK I will say

Now your job is to convince me...that why should I still buy this model over others....

I know I have some objects....but you have to overcome those and convince me, its like you are selling me that notebook.

Also as compare to the notebook you suggested, why shouldn't I Buy Centrino, which is basically 2999.99 descent one, with 1MB L2 Cache... which is huge..as I guess and battery life is about 5.8 hours average....

Please suggest ...Thanks

I will only goto store...when I am ready to Buy....

by: write2mohitPosted on 2003-08-03 at 20:35:45ID: 9064098

This questions is for your opinions and my opinions....

and at the end we will have a conclusion... Trust me

Mohit,

You're question is basivcally impossible to answer without more detailed feedback from you. Its like looking for advice on buying a car (god bless the car analogy ;=]) and saying 'I want car, pay less than 10,000, what is best' Its just not enough to go on. Do you want to drive offroad? Do you want a soft-top? Do you want a powerful engine, mag wheels? What color?

Likewise .. Do you want to play games? Watch DVD's? Impress your freinds with stylish looks? Have you any special requirements like a large screen or huge hard-disk space?

If your main goal is to say write a book in MS Word, but you would also like something flashy to impress friends then you could get a machine with slower CPU and a longer battery life but that looks like a porche!

Alternately if you want games and DVD's in addition to the usual MS office stuff and  good looks to boot then I think Albertabeef's suggestion is Top notch (Its sounds sweet, man he has nealry convinced me and I'm not even lookin for a lappie!)

Anyways I hope you see my point, if you feedback to us lets say your top 5 priorities of use for the thing then you'll probably get what yer looking for a great deal faster.

Cheers,

Gerry.

Mohit says >> would prefer to buy directly from manufacture or a retailer that too probally be canadian.
Well I think you should go for dell since they dont sell there products through dealers. Dell stands for there reputation. Your next choice is Sony. As far as my experience says these two companies have manufactured very good notebooks in the past and stand for there name.

Warning: Never go for Toshiba notebooks.  Read this lawsuit against toshiba http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,103700,00.asp.

>>I want all the latest features... but there are sooo many companies offering same features.. Like DELL, GATEWAY, TOSHIBA and some like Custom Made Laptops.
What you think may be latest for the time being. But when six months or a year passes after you buy your new laptop other new technologies will be existing in the market and your laptop may look outdated. Well never mind. Before buying you should check for all these latest ports:

USB, IEEE-1394 and Infrared. Along with these latest ports it should also provide Serial, Parallel and the likes.

Also check you have the following removable storage media:
FDD (if you prefer)
CD-RW/DVD-RW (if you want to write cd's and dvd's)
Smartmedia. and etc.

You should be aware of what technologies you need and check whether they are available on the notebook that you are going to buy. Hope this helps. Again remember never buy a Toshiba model(I have one and I know how much it S**ks.)

by: triaditPosted on 2003-08-04 at 12:32:00ID: 9073451

how much is $3500 canadian in US dollars

by: write2mohitPosted on 2003-08-04 at 15:32:41ID: 9074865

its about 2500 US dollars

by: write2mohitPosted on 2003-08-04 at 15:36:31ID: 9074882

Thanks b_vishwajit

Your idea is really good... but if you can get me some URLs which really good laptops which I should consider, that would be great....

As the whole point is VALUE FOR MY MONEY..... I ofcourse want to have all the features.... but again I have to consider the some features which are slow and not common, like DVD writers, Heck no I don't want to sit for hours to burn a DVD, but if some of them comes with and have all other features and beats other laptop in the market, then I don't mind....

Bottom line, I want something with kind of everything of little bit and should have good reviews and stuff

So instead telling me don't go for Toshiba or Go for Dell or Gateway, please tell me which model should I go for and whyyy should I go for that one over others..

Thanks

Mohit

Well Mohit cool down man. You are so much worried about your investement (yeha me too worried in the begining and finaly when i bought my first notebook my thirst for latest technologies was quenched , yeham somewhat). I would suggest you not to spend more than USD 2000. You can get a very good note book in that amount which comes with all latest techie ports, storage media and etc and etc.

Links: Well let me search for the best notebook models out there and I will post the links according to some priority.
But this time you should decide to buy a model. You will definitely get full meaning to your investment only when you buy it and use it. Unless and until how will you come to know that your investment is going to be valued (Uncertain???)
?????????????

Mohit

there is no question to go for Dell and the best model that Dell targets compnies with is the Latitude why for the following reasons:

1. it is more reliable that the inspiron
2. it has a moderate weight "close to light weight"

regarding features, you can have it as you want, I will recommend model C640 which so far I bought 5 of them eventhough I was  fan of inspiron models however there is no comparison

they start from about $1300

and here all the info you need about it

http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/products/model_latit_latit_c640.htm

make sure to buy dell full cover with it for a couple of hundred dollares so if you drop it on the floor "and it was your fault" dell will still change it for you, you will enjoy hasdsle free warranty for 3 years

and do not forget to include the wireless lan as well with it

cheers

Hello Ahmed

Thanks for posting the links... But the notebook you showing me is Outdated.

Well Outdated in the sense, it takes SD RAM instead of DDR Ram,

No where in the customization screen, I have seen, I can put any DDR ram.

Sorry to say, but I want something which is current in the market too.

Well, do post some more links which u think better...

Thanks again

The following is Intel available processors as published by Dell, I can only see one model with the Xeon cpu "the precesion model" as seen in the following link on Dell web site "Canada" http://www.dell.com/ca/en/biz/products/line_notebooks.htm

make sure to talk to them and confirm because when I tried to customise it I found the only cpu options available wa P4 which is number 3 in the following CPUs list, so the Xeon cpu has the HT technology as seen below but P4 can have it or not 2 and 3 below :

Intel Processors:
--------------------
1.   Intel® XeonTM
The Intel Xeon Processor with 533 MHz front side bus for servers and workstations features innovative technologies such as the Intel NetBurstTM  Microarchitecture and Hyper-Threading Technology. It offers outstanding platform performance, dependability, value and versatility to provide headroom for current and future server and workstation platforms. Make time now to upgrade from older systems and increase your business's competitive advantage.
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.  Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology
Intel Pentium 4 processors with Hyper-Threading Technology are fast and efficient. Hyper-Threading technology allows these blazing fast processors to function more efficiently when running multiple tasks at the same time. This benefit is also highlighted when several CPU-intense applications are running simultaneously.
Inside each Intel processor is an instruction queue of actions waiting to be completed. While one activity is being performed, Hyper-Threading uses idle processor sections to begin the next activity. This efficient use of processing power can enable users to work with multiple applications more effectively, so more tasks can be done in less time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.  Intel Pentium® 4 Processor
The Intel Pentium 4 processor for the desktop provides solid performance on today's high-end applications. The Pentium 4 processor also offers excellent performance for emerging web-based activities and multitasking-oriented users. This desktop processor also offers a great value when used in notebooks. It can deliver significant power and performance at a great price. This is good for customers looking for desktop power in a notebook and who are not as concerned with size and weight. Ideal for people who will be running mainstream applications like internet surfing, digital picture editing, multimedia presentations, word processing, spreadsheets, and basic gaming.1
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.  Intel® Pentium®  M Processor
Intel's latest processor is the first-ever to be designed from the ground up for mobile computing, allowing systems to be thin, light, and have long battery life. The New Pentium® M processor incorporates innovative power-management features that enable extended battery time while still delivering the power to run robust applications delivering the excellent balance of mobility and performance. Combine this processor with the Intel 855 Chipset Family and the Intel PRO Wireless technology to get the Intel Pentium M processor with Centrino technology (see below). This processor is great for people on the go who are running applications like word processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc., as well as running productivity applications, doing presentations, and working wirelessly on a regular basis.
The Pentium M is designed to yield performance beyond advertised processor speeds. On many industry standard benchmarks, the Pentium M at 1.6 GHz performed comparably to the Mobile Pentium 4-M.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.  Intel® CentrinoTM  Mobile Technology
Intel Centrino mobile technology is a great new set of technologies including the Pentium M processor, Intel 855 Chipset Family, and Intel PRO Wireless Mini-PCI card. Centrino mobile technology is not a processor alone, but rather is a brand umbrella for these 3 parts. The Intel PRO Wireless mini-PCI card allows you to connect to 802.11 b wireless networks and the Pentium M processor enables thin, light systems with long battery life. Put this all together and you get a system that is easy to carry, easy to connect, and easy to use for a long time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6.  Mobile Intel Pentium® 4 Processor-M
Based on the same technology as the popular desktop Pentium 4 processor, the Mobile Pentium 4-M processor features similar architecture but optimized for battery life and other mobile computing needs so that you can run power intensive components with minimal impact to battery life. Mobile Pentium 4-M processors offer high performance to run robust applications delivering excellent multimedia performance with great mobility. It's great for creating digital video, editing digital photos, gaming, delivering multimedia presentations, and desktop publishing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7.  Intel Pentium® III Processor-M
The Mobile Intel Pentium III Processor-M offers dependability and good mobility for ultra thin and light systems. Mobile Intel Pentium III-M products are available in low voltage and ultra low voltage models, for mini- and sub-notebooks, as well as tablet PC platforms.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8.  Intel Celeron®
The Intel Celeron processor is designed to bring a balanced level of proven technology and value to basic PC desktops. With the Intel Celeron processor you can expect an affordable and reliable PC for your home or home office to meet your basic computing needs, such as e-mailing friends and relatives, tracking home finances, and running interactive or educational software for your kids.

cheers

For high-end systems, I've always been a fan of alienware. It's just seemed to me that they offer the most bang for the buck. They have started offering laptops as well, so perhaps it would be something you'd be interested in. Here's a link to their laptop page:

Thanks,

Also What I have noticed is that

if you going for HT Technology, your notebook will be heavy...

What you think, is Centrino technology good for gaming  as what I am seeing is that in Centrino processors

You get maximum or 1.6 Ghz if you looking to spend around 3500 dollars.

and even I have seen some notebooks with 2.66 Ghz Mobile P4 processors which are around 2100 dollars.

There is some difference in weight for sure which is about only 2-3 pounds I will say.

So what you think which is best value....and which gives overall more output

With regard to games its almost always going to be the Video card thats the limiting factor.
Laptops are ALWAYS going to be way behind the latest video card technology (latest cards run HOt and are HUGE, both are are at a premuim in portable computing) the best you can hope for are the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 and GeforceGo the Radeon appears to be streets ahead though:

http://www4.tomshardware.com/mobile/20020220/radeon7500-08.html

Any laptop that comes with this as an option is going to be close to top of the line, so I reckon if you go with the cheapest Insperon (you sound like you are sold on Dell) with this card you can't go too far wrong.

Gerry.

by: meehangePosted on 2003-08-07 at 23:27:35ID: 9106048

I would doubt ANY computers are MADE in Canada.

hey write2mohit

I live in Canada too and shopping for laptop.

The best place to buy the laptop will be staples, or futureshop.
Ofcourse you have to decide which laptop you like first but you should buy only from staples or futureshop as they will beat any price in the market and will give you a good deal too.

About laptops, I have been looking major websites, there ranking and there features

You will never find a better place to compare all the laptops

One is you can go here ==> http://pcworld.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php/page_id=13/ut=188d12f09c4fba0d

Here is TOP 15 LAPTOPS ==> http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,111647,pg,1,00.asp

Here you see, are mostly US based prices, but most of the laptops are avilable over here in canada too. But as to get something best for your money, you should compare all the laptops over here and also there is one more which I really like is

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,111647,pg,1,00.asp

This site above has reviews for most of the laptops too. Thats the best you can do, no one will hold your hands and take you to the laptop you want, you have to work for it.

I gave you tools and now you work and let me know.

Good luck !

I would have to say, go for Dell and get an Inspiron 8500+ (has not shipped yet but will be soon) which uses the latest technology in the following areas:

It uses up to a 1.7 GHz Pentium-M processor with 1MB L2 cache which can even outperform most notebook processors at 2.

It has a 15.4 inch wide screen that has a 16:10 aspect ratio, perfect for watching widescreen DVD movies!

It has PC 2700 DDR memory and supports up to 2GB of it!

Up to an 80 GB ultra ATA hard drive

DVD+RW drive if you want it or save money with a CDRW/DVD combo drive

MiniPCI Wireless card (if it is an Intel wireless then you would have Centrino Technology!

You can get a complete care warranty that covers your system if you do "accidental" damage to it like drop it, spill something on it, run over it with your car, or anything other that is an accident.  It even covers surges but does not cover theft of course.

If you have a business and can get it under a business, you can purchase Gold Technical Support which is based in Round Rock, TX in the US with industry certified technicians that can answer your call in under 2 minutes in about 90% of their calls!

If I were you, hold off for a little bit until this system is released so you can get the best technology out there.

And please do not be cheap when buying a laptop or you will be very disappointed.

Thanks turbo76542

Your suggestion was really helpful too.

But is there any information about this notebook you talked about above, like whats going to be the price and when will be the released date and how much these warranties cost and stuff.

If you can send me the link that would be great , Thanks

Mohit

I will get you that information as soon as I can

by: turbo76542Posted on 2003-08-13 at 16:47:39ID: 9142933

Actually the Dell computer I was talking about is going to be the Inspiron 8600 with the same specs as mentioned above.  It will be released on the 18th of August this year.  I don't know what the cost will be but if you check out http://www.dell.com, you should be able to price one around the 18th or sooner.  The Complete Care warranty will add about $468 US or around that which is what I paid for it.  I paid $3500 US for my Inspiron 8200 and got complete care, onsite service. I also got a leather carrying case, wireless network card and wireless base station.  All of this from Dell and all supported by Dell.  No third party stuff that is not covered.  I can price one out when they are available and give you the specs too if I get a chance.

hey turbo76542

thats quite pricey notebook you got. As 3500 US is around $5000 Canadian.

Wow thats alot of money for the notebook nowadays. I hope 8600 won't be that expensive.

by: turbo76542Posted on 2003-08-14 at 18:07:36ID: 9151293

The computer itself did not cost 3500.  As I stated, I got a leather carrying case ($100), A wireless base station (about $200), a wireless pcmcia card ($100), and other odds and ends.  This system was bought a year ago and systems are cheaper now.  When I got it, it was top of the line.  I'm sure it won't be that expensive now though and you will get better performance than mine for sure.

Well, lets seee, when 8600 willl come out I would really like to take a look.

We will wait another 3 days, as u mentioned it will be out around August 18th
