BTW, no you don't need a sound card.  Everything is done as digital data, so you're fine as long as the CD isn't "copy controlled"

i use dbpoweramp from http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ -

it can convert files to a multitude of formats (they have a list of codecs and you download th one you want )
its based around a right click operation just right click the file and hit convert
can extract audio from cds and convert to a format of your choice, (it connects to a free ccdb and fils in track names for you if you convert to a format with id tags)
it has a plugin which allows you to download tracks to devices like mp3 players so you dont have to use often rubish branded software
it also allows you to veiw all file imformation about music tracks and playlists just by hovering over file with mouse.
has a free file selector add on which helps batch conversion
and can record from your line in port

all this is free except the burner and portable music up/down loader which are shareware
theres also an optional power pack which gives you more options (cost about $20)

you shouldnt need a sound card

hope this helps
