The devices that aren't working are cm8330 sb16 driver wdm. it is a c-media game port. and cm188330/c3d audio adapter. It is a sound/video/ and game controllers. these two devices are listed as the same name on my hardware manager. there was 4 of them listed of the same name. but i was able to install 2 of them. and when i went to install the other 2 it couldn't find one of the files and it said the only place i couled look for the file was on the h drive. and i don't even have an h drive anymore. so i think i completely messed my computer up does anyone know how to help      thank you casey wheeler

>>>messed with the inside of my computer.<<<   What did you mess with?

by: wheeler4202001Posted on 2003-09-14 at 21:29:25ID: 9360124

I removed one of my spare hard drives. and replaced some of the ide cables. i really didn't do that much to it. i also tried to install linux on my spare hard drive. but it didn't work because it said the medium is bad. so that's about it. also i downloaded freshdiagnosis and it said that all of that stuff is on there. and it even lists my cable modem so i don't know what's going on.

by: coral47Posted on 2003-09-14 at 21:53:26ID: 9360234

Go back in there and check all cards and cables to make sure they are seated firmly and the cables are not backwards.

by: wheeler4202001Posted on 2003-09-14 at 22:15:06ID: 9360313

I didn't mess with any of the usb cables. it is connected through a wire to the motherboard. it is not connected in anyway that i know how to do. it is like a small ide cable that connects a small card to the motherboard. not through any direct insertion into the motherboard. and i looked at those cables and i still didn't see any connections. not intact.

>>I removed one of my spare hard drives. and replaced some of the ide cables<<

So there is a hard drive alone on a ribbon where it use to share that ribbon with another
hard drive? Change the jumper to "Master only"?

You have the correct molex (plug on the IDE ribbon) to match the correct jumper setting?

by: wheeler4202001Posted on 2003-09-15 at 02:57:27ID: 9361562

I have the jumpers to master only. i don't know if the hard drive jumpers have anything to do with it. but i do know that my hard drive is set to master. i don't know what the correct molex is but the red ribbon is facing towards the power plug.

It sounds as if you have on board USB attached to a motherboard header.
Did you go into the BIOS setup and perhaps disable the usb?

by: wheeler4202001Posted on 2003-09-15 at 10:25:07ID: 9364535

I don't know what you mean by that I didn't disable the usb because i couldn't find anything that has a usb device for it.  i enabled a port that a windows help page said it is controled through but it didn't help

Do You know how to enter the BIOS/CMOS setup? (usually the delete key)
BIOS/CMOS is the first thing to load before the operating system.
If so check to see if the USB is enabled or disabled within the BIOS/CMOS.
If You could tell us what motherboard or the brand of the pc. It would help us to give you better instructions.

by: wheeler4202001Posted on 2003-09-15 at 10:45:30ID: 9364677

I don't know what the motherboard is and the pc is homemade by my grandpa. but i don't want to call him because he's been getting a little mad with all of the questions i ask him. i do know how to get into the bios settings. but i don't know what the usb port would be called and when  looked it didn't have a setting that specificaly said usb ports. so i don't know how to figure out what kind of mother board i have.

Go here and get Belarc adviser.

In safe mode remove the devices that aren't working correctly. After rebooting when it looks for drvr install files, put in you xp cd or point it to c:\winnt\options\cabs. If it can't find the drvr files there then try c:\winnt, c:\winnt\system or system32, or c:\winnt\inf.
