Forgot, Are you using PC100 ram?

Browse All TopicsHi all,
I recently upgraded an older computer to a Super Socket 7
board(SY-5EH5/5EHM V1.0) with an AMD k6-2 500 processor. I re-used all other components:
ISA BUS:
56k Modem
Sound Blaster Sound Card
Adaptec 1502AE SCSI card
PCI BUS
ATI RageII+ 4meg Video Card
Manual for board:
http://www.soyousa.com/dow
The board installed okay with a 5.0 multiplier and 100MgHz
FSB. I selected to use AGP clock rather than PCI clock for Memory frequency.
I installed Windows 98 SE and all went well. I used the driver
files from the company(SOYO) for chipset functions and Bus Mastering.
All went well and all cards and and funtionality seemed okay.
However, during scanning with the scanner the system will freeze up.
Is the system hanging due to PCI video or could it be because the
ISA bus and/ or the bus master drivers from SOYO?
I am considering purchasing an AGP video card for the system but
do not wish to replace the ISA cards as this could be very expensive.
What type of setup is required to run a stable system ?
Would dropping the FSB speed to 66 improve stability?
There is a 5.5 multiplier X 66mgHz would give an underclocked
speed of 360 mgHz.
Anybody with experience with this type of setup and providing
the best information regarding my Options will be rewarded the points.
thanks,
Tandy

Why are you doing this? "I selected to use AGP clock rather than PCI clock for Memory frequency."
If you are running a PCI Video card, why are you running an AGP Clock speed? you aren't using/utilizing the AGP Socket.
I dont know why you are having trouble running a stable system. I would suggest you try removing all other ISA and PCI boards that are not necessary for scanning/booting the machine up. And see if maybe something is conflicting. If nothing is conflicting, then it could be an OS problem. What OS are you running? Win 98? 98 SE? Something else?
coral47 >>>The scanner is attached to the scuzzy card on an ISA bus.
It worked fine on the older pentium board. (66 mgHZ bus)
I am using 128meg dimm socket pc100 sdram.
When scanning the system freezes up. I am wondering if the
ISA bus simply can not tolerate the faster processor. Also I am
using SOYO 's bus mastering drivers and wondering if thats an issue.
Would like to know before I invest in an AGP video card. Don't want to
get into a situation where I have to replace the old cards.
Wakeup >>> Windows 98 se. I used agp clock for memory because I thought
it would improve performance.
Ok. Go into BIOS and put memory on PCI clock. Check your ISA BUSS divider. It should be pci/4, which makes it 8.25 MHz ( 33MHz divide by 4 ) You might want to try the 7.xx setting for testing. Let us know what happens.
The SOYO BM drivers might be a problem, but I don't think so. I would uninstall them as a last thing to try.
I think your problem is an IRQ conflict between the SCSI adapter and some other device.
The SCSI card is not plug-and-play and the IRQ is hard jumpered, default is usually IRQ-11, but can be changed to 9,10,11, or 12.
If you look in Device Manager you will probably find a "!" or "?" on one or more devices. If so, then there is a conflict.
To resolve the conflict you will have to reserve the IRQ being used the SCSI adapter by going into the bios and setting the IRQ being used to LEGACY-ISA.
Reboot and check the Device Manager again, it may still be showing a conflict.
If so, then, change the IRQ setting for the SCSI card in the device manager to force it to use the proper IRQ.
Hope this helps.
lidsky >>> There are no IRQ conflicts. I had already set up the scscii exactly as you said.
I removed the bus master drivers and windows installed their
own version and the scanner is now working. In fact the system
seems more responsive to overall function.
It was an attemp to maximize performance that lead me to install the Bus Master drivers. You would think the owner of the board (SOYO) should be able to provide better working drivers.
I don't know if leaving the BM divers on and reducing the bus speed would have made a difference or not and I am not going to try all the possibilities as it seems to working okay.
I think perhaps the BM drivers were greatly confused (it seems)
by the scanner on the ISA bus. Perhaps they(BM Drivers) would work betterif I had only PCI devices and AGP video. Although the AGP Video is a strong possibilty, changing the three ISA cards is not. So I will stick with the Generic drivers.
I admit it was a bit of a vague rather than specific question and I was looking for someone who had perhaps been down a very similiar road. As such I am going to split the points as I aprreciate you taking time to consider the problem.
I will leave the question open for any closing comments before awarding the points.

>>>AGP clock rather than PCI clock for Memory frequency.<<< Try going back to PCI clock or tweak your memory settings down some.
What is the buss is the scanner running on?
