error 0280 previous boot incomplete

HP Pavilion 8575c running win98 I get an intermittant boot error 0280 Previous boot incomplete -
default configuration used. I have checked the cmos battery and is OK. I also reseated BIOS chip.
Everything in setup seems to be fine.

Did you load test the battery with a battery tester?
Or just check the voltage?

For the price of a new battery I would replace it.
If that don't fix it you may have a problem with the RTC or a bad motherboard.
