I like the GetDataBack program - my hard drive was beyond recovery, but it still could see it and attempted to read it. It was unsuccessful, but it got further than others I tried.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have a HP Netserver E60 running Win2k server sp4, with system partition on SCSI drive 10GB, and data mount E: and F: on a IDE 60GB Maxtor. Today the IDE seems to have failed: in syslog I have these dmio errors: ID 7 Device Harddrive 0 has a bad block, ID 35 block ___ (mountpoint E:) uncorrectable read error, and ID 29 Read error at block _you name it________ status 0xC000009c. among others. The applications installed on the data partition will not run, it says that the drive is not accessible. If I go into the server and try to run ANYTHING that tries to populate the drives other than the C: system it hangs, such as My Computer, Win Explorer, Backup Exec, Antivirus scan, etc. Safe mode, last known config all dont help. There are many GBs of crucial information on that drive, and I do have a recent backup on a DLT from Veritas BExec. I need to know whether the drive is recoverable to get the most recent data, and rebuild an image to a new drive, or if I need to buy another 60GB drive and try to restore from the DLT. Then, I would need to know how to do the restore, if anyone can assist. Are there any 3rd party boot utilities that will allow access and repair of the disk?
Thanks for any and all help.

Well, this is what I did:
Searched on Event ID 29, which says there is a bad block, status 0xc000009c. That led me to MS Q325615 which said to try chkdsk. It seemed to hang, so I gave up and moved on to putting in a new hard drive, and using the backup tape to restore it. When I realized that their backup tape was not going to give me the data needed (it was selected to back up but for some reason the restore selections were limited), I put in the bad drive again and tried chkdsk again, and I just walked away after initiating it. 15 minutes later, it had found the NTFS file system on the disk, and from there proceeded to run for 5 hours, and made 99% of the repairs needed to the disk. It reported a bad block still, so I used Casper XP to copy the data from the bad disk to a new disk, and removed the old disk. No recovery tools needed, and it looks like we are back in business.
I'd still be careful with that drive...I recently had a maxtor 40GB fail myself. Bad sectors seem to be infectious - usually when one pops up, others will follow. My error occured within the windows swap file, so I had to use DOS to back up the drive before shelfing it (Time for an RMA, woohoo).
