Question

pc closes windows, then hangs and emits long beeps

Asked by: DaveSW

OK, ex tiny machine, rebuilt in a new case with an extra cd writer, and upgraded to windows XP.

P4 1.6, geforce4, 300w PSU, 60GB H/D, 2 x cd drives, et al.

When shut down, it displays an error message about the hp printer (program not responding), then when end now is pressed it appears to shut down. The screen goes blank and it sits there emitting one long beep after another.

I've just cleaned two of the lovesan viri off it too.

Any ideas?

When the screen goes blank observe the HD and cd rom led's to see if you can determine if it is rebooting. 1 long beep usually indicates a memory refresh error. also if you press the reset button does it reboot normally?

haven't actually got the pc with me now, but if I power off by holding in the power button it does reboot perfectly.

I'm not sure but I think I remember the HD was lit.

It can't hurt to check the RAM to see if it's faulty: www.memtest86.com

I did actually run memtest but it was in my friends house and he wanted to go out, so I only had time to let it get to 100%, rather than the full 20mins. Is the full 20mins necessary?

It's best if it runs longer, because if it fails, you know you have a problem, but if it doesn't fail, that does not mean your memory is good.  Only a replacement with good memory that works will tell you that.
