Question

High Speed USB

Asked by: chauncey_nz

Hi there,
I just bought a new computer and an external dvd writer however the dvd writer won't work on my usb, I know that I have the 2.0 and even when I put in my flash disk it says that I am plugged into a non highspeed port.  It says that there are no high speed usb controllers installed on this computer.  Does that mean that I am ripped off.  I have had my new desktop pc for 2 days.

As I am not a really computer literate person, I don't know what else I am meant to put in here in order to help you help me, so please bare with me.

Thanks so much in advance for trying to help.

Thanks for that, I will check now.

If it turns out you don't have a USB 2.0 controller, you can add one on fairly cheaply: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=15-102-008&depa=0
I have one of these and it works well.

by: chauncey_nzPosted on 2004-05-08 at 19:03:05ID: 11024179

Hi this message is to shoobin, my os is Office XP Professional thanks.

Now this next message is for Callandor.  Sorry to be a pain, but as I don't know much about computers, what exactly is a USB 2.0 controller and I know this may seem a redundant question, but doesn't buy a new computer ensure you of having these items needed?  Sorry to be a pain, just don't understand.  My old computer couldn't run the new dvd writer, and it was because of that USB 2.0 thing, so I bought one with it in, and where I live we have like only 2 shops that sell computers and they didn't even know how to help, so they said that was all I needed, does that mean I was duped.

Thanks for looking into my question guys. It's much appreciated.

OK, I have had a look into that link you gave Callandor, so am I right when I say that it is the card I need?  Cause I am trying to look for a place in New Zealand, and preferably in the town I live in to buy one from...as they are as primitive as apes around here...lol.  Anyway, the dvd writer I have, it says I need a hi-speed usb 2.0, OR IEEE 1394, so could I just buy the firewire card thingy to install in a computer, or do you need some other thingymebobs to go with it to make IEEE 1394 work on any computer.  It's just that I found on the box that it can connect that way, and also, iI found one in a store that is in our town for $45 bucks....not too expensive I THINK....don't know really....lol.

Thanks again

Do you have a motherboard brand and model number you can share with us?
Or if it is a branded pc like Dell HP ect...

This would help to determine if you have usb 2.0 or not.
Many new motherboards also have IEEE1394 onboard also.

by: shoobinPosted on 2004-05-08 at 20:16:21ID: 11024499

Have u use Winxp sp1?
It's mostly needed for recognizing usb 2.0.

by: CallandorPosted on 2004-05-08 at 20:40:14ID: 11024562

Yes, if you could get a card like the one shown, or one with Firewire, it will support the drive.  But before you do that, you should check if your motherboard doesn't already have either of these things already.  Download and run this program called Everest and copy and paste your motherboard information: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html.  Also search the output and see if these two terms are found anywhere.

by: chauncey_nzPosted on 2004-05-08 at 23:23:08ID: 11024800

Hi again, sorry about not getting back sooner, to snowguy: my motherboard is (I think, just reading off the manual) GE PRO-HT/ GE PRO-M2 ASRock...I hope thats right.  I never thought to have a look if the IEEE1394 is on board...how dopey of me.

To shoobin, I don't know about winxp sp1 yet, I have only had my new computer over the last 2 days, and most of that time was just introducing myself to it...sorry.  I am just assuming I don't have it, did I need to buy it with my computer?

To Callandor: I am just doing as you suggest right now, if I get stuck I will let you know immediately....

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Clearly the motherboard supports usb 2.0
It dose not have IEEE1394
http://www.asrock.com/product/product_gepro-m2.htm

If you do not have Sp1 installed do so now.Sp1 has an update for usb 2.0
Also get up to date on the other critical updates.
If you are on a dial up connection plan on most of the day.

by: SnowguyPosted on 2004-05-09 at 06:15:24ID: 11025586

You may want to consider the IEEE1394 also as the sustained throughput is higher then the USB2.0
And it is nice to have both.

by: CallandorPosted on 2004-05-09 at 13:01:17ID: 11026806

As Snowguy has verified, the motherboard has USB 2.0 ports in the back, so make sure you installed the USB patch he mentioned in the first post.  The Firewire comparison is something to keep in mind, because DV camcorders still use Firewire to transfer video, as opposed to USB 2.0.  Here's an inexpensive card: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=15-115-002&depa=0

Thank you thank you thankyou, I don't know how I could have done this, there just isn't this kind of help where I live.  I would like you all to know that I woke up this morning, read your answers, and Snowguy, I just installed that SP1 as you suggested, and man there were heaps of those critical thingys as well, thank you so much.  and Callandor, I have just returned to get that Fireire card and will have that installed for me today, as I have a DV camcorder, and I didn't even realise I could load it onto the machine, I just read that I could create home DVDs, that is just toooooooo cool.  Thank you both so much for the unbelievable fast answers and great support!!!

Oh and also, I will give you both the points, but I hope you don't mind I would like to leave this thread open for 2 days to get yous to maybe help me in case I have some teething problems with this thing, or do you suggest that I just open another question when I get the firewire loaded, cause that would go into another area of hardware wouldn't it, actually, that seems like a better deal, I best be stopping being so stingy with the points...lol

by: SnowguyPosted on 2004-05-09 at 14:11:17ID: 11027050

You are welcome glad to be of help.
I take it you have the usb 2.0 working now?
And if you want to or need to leave the Q open for a few days is fine with me.

by: chauncey_nzPosted on 2004-05-09 at 14:14:09ID: 11027057

Hi Snowguy,

it sure does, who would have thought that I needed those downloads, I didn't even know they existed.  Thanks, I will leave it open, at least till I take my machine to put the card in, and give it a go.  I have both the USB cable for the writer, and the firewire, so I might as well try them both.

THANKS AGAIN.

by: chauncey_nzPosted on 2004-05-09 at 17:28:03ID: 11027653

Hi Shoobin,

thanks for that, I now have the winxp sp1.  I just didn't realise I was entitled to it.  Thanks for getting back to my question though.  It's much appreciated.
