Well, sometimes the 1720 error is a false message but most on laptops. For Compaq and HP computers you can find diagnostic software on the HP site, visit www.hp.com and see if you find something for your computer.

Browse All TopicsI realize that it is telling me the hard drive maybe bad. However, when I press F1 I just hang on the Windows 98 screen. F10 setup shows that it recognizes I have a primary drive 0 for my hard drive. Also at the beginning when I get the black screen with 1720 smart message it tells me right about it that 17820 (or more don't remember) kb are fine. I tried to run a scandisk as routine maintenance yesterday and it hung 3/4 of the way through so I exited out. This is a loaner machine to a school - I don't have any restore disks. I can't help but think it has something to do with breaking out of the scandisk yesterday. How can I get to defrag or scan disk again? Or is there a diagnostic site I can download the info to a floppy on and try to boot it that way. Help!!

You can't fix a SMART error condition by running scandisk - that's only for momentary file corruption. A SMART error is more primitive, and anytime you get one of these, you better back up your data and forget about putting anything important on it. There are some utilities that might be able to retrieve some or all of the data, but you should consider this disk as junk.
