Question

Power Supply "Issue"

Asked by: FrankOwen

I have a Compaq EVO D300.  I am currently running 3 hard drives, a DVD Burner, a ATI AIW 9800 PRO, a ATI 9200, and a few other random cards plus a few USB devices.  I KNOW I am WAY over my power limit, but I cannot find a PSU that will work with this Compaq.  My first dilemma is that it had a 24 PIN connector.  I have found a ATX power supply with a 24 pin connector, but the wires don't look like they match.  So I call HP/Compaq to see if they made a replacement part.  Tech support sent me to the parts department, and when I got there, they wanted to transfer me back to tech support.

So my question is what can I do here?  I have thought of getting a case to handle dual power supply's, and throw in a second power supply for thew peripherals, but I don't think the mobo will line up.  I was also thinking about getting the PSU with the 24 pin connector, and see if I can re wire the connector, but I cannot find any documentation on the current power supply (HP Part # 243890)

I have used the wattage calcularot before, but the problem I will have with that adapter is that the Compaq motherboard is 24 pins instead of the standard 20 pins.

Here are the different kinds of power connectors used by manufacturers: http://www.affordablesurplus.com/power-supply-inquiry.htm

There seems to be only one kind of 24-pin connector.  But here is another question related to 20-pin vs 24-pin power supplies, along with wiring specs.  I hope this will solve your problem.

The problem is with the brand of your computer. Unless they changed, Compaqs are not upgradeable unless you go through Compaq parts. I had a Compaq a while ago and I couldn't do anything with it without buying overpriced Compaq parts.

Vantec makes a 24 pin psu that appears to have the standard ATX pinout with 4 extra pins built on to the end of the connector providing another +3.3v, +5v, +12v and a com. This spec sheet shows the pinout.

http://vantecusa.com/pdf/van420.pdf

Take a look at the connector on your system an determine if the first 20 pins match the standard ATX configuration. You can probably do this by reading the colors. Although there is some variation in wire colors:
-12v, usually blue but I have seen brown
-5v usually white but have seen blue.
Power OK, usually grey but have seen white.
+5vdc are virtually always red.
Com (grnd) = Black.
+3.3 = Orange.
+5vsb (standby) = purple.
+12v = yellow.
Power On/Off = Green.

If in doubt and you have a multimeter, you might try shorting pins 14 and 15 as shown and described in the following three links.

Vantec also makes larger units with 24 pin connectors.
