Question

What's wrong with my pc ? it can't start at all.

Asked by: mrpc_cambodia

Now my pc (pentium 3 733 MHz) can't start at all.

nothing is shown on the screen when i turned on the computer.

round about 5 seconds after i press the power button to start the pc, the power light keeps on flashing.

I did try to start my pc with the minimun hardware (mainboard, ram, cpu, vga, power supply), but the result was the same.

I tried to replace ram with a known working one and even try to start the pc without vga card connected, but nothing improved.

The only thing that i can see is the power light keeps on flashing.

I checked my mainboard already. i can't find any conductor with curve surface.

For my own ideas, i think it may be the cpu or mainboard problem.

So what do u suggest ? what my be the cause of the problem ?

Thanks,

If you can get your hands on a power supply, try running it with that.  Was the computer working, then just died, or is it one you've put together, and just never got it running?  Please give details.

"even try to start the pc without vga card connected" - If you don't have the card in the system, it definatly won't start.  If your just refering to the monitor connected, that shouldn't make any difference.  I have seen some cards that won't start the computer UNLESS the monitor is actually connected, but I really doubt this is the case.

It sounds like a boot problem with your Hardrive, if you can, slave it into another computer and scan it for viruses and to make sure there are still files there.

Can you boot into the BIOS?  Hit the power button and hold either the DEL key or F2 and see if the computer goes into the BIOS.  If not, it's a motherboard issue.

If it were memory, it would beep.

Do the disks and fans all spin up?

Do you get any beeping sounds?

Do you have a video card or is it built into the motherboard?

by: mrpc_cambodiaPosted on 2004-06-24 at 18:32:46ID: 11394863

Yes, my harddisk and fans all spin up.

A few second after i press the power button to start the computer, a beeping sound comes out just one time and then the power light starts to flash (non-stop).

but i dont think it's the memory (ram) problem because i have changed the memory one time already and the result was still the same.

And if it is the harddisk problem at least the computer will show something. But in my case nothing is shown except one beeping sound and the power light keeps flashing.

Thanks,

What kind of bios is it?
Beep codes:

You said you didn't think it was memory?
Help:
http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/boot/walk/index.htm

Check to make shure the cpu is mounted properly, and if you can, try another cpu.
What kind of video card are you using. agp? pci?
Look at the motherboard (take a good look) Are there any burst, or swollen capacitors?
And like eccs19 said; try another power supply.

I have also jad this same problem wiht a defective power switch, try either replacing it or removing it and jumper it to power up.

by: rfr1tzPosted on 2004-06-25 at 06:56:25ID: 11398515

That single beep is GOOD news - that means the POST succeeded.

Why don't we think it's a video card problem? It sounds like the computer works OK, except nothing is on the screen. (Yeah, that blinking power light is suspicious - maybe it goes into "suspend".) But the video card is a definite candidate.

BTW, are you sure the monitor works?

by: mrpc_cambodiaPosted on 2004-06-25 at 18:24:43ID: 11403603

rfr1tz, u are right.

It's a problem with my video card. when i change with a new one it work fine.

Thanks for your help,
