HP Display shows burn in screen when computer off.

I recently helped my brother switch to a newer computer. Since he was using the newer monitor with his old computer, we got everything going with his old monitor. When hooked up the newer monitor to the system, the monitor started putting up a half blue, half white screen that said "burn in". I thought that it might be driver related, but I thought you might have a better idea. This is an HP M50 15" monitor and I couldn't find any burn in reference on the HP support site. I also searched this site.

One piece of input on your search interface. I kept putting in search argument and having it released when I hit enter vs the submit button on the screen.

Thanks,

Chuck

Do you even get the POST screen (or a computer mfg's logo) before your O/S loads?
If not, check connection/cable and verify new monitor function with another computer.

If yes, start up in safe mode (if applicable) and set something like standard SVGA values to begn with for your new monitor. I assume a windows O/S here. For Linux you'll need to run the Xconfigurator or something to set monitor limits.

Once the computer (Windows 98) connects, everything runs fine including the HP Expanding Capabilities screen.  I don't know if I need to be concerned, but I'm advising my brother to turn the monitor off.

This may be a feature of the monitor to prevent static images from leaving leaving a permanent picture on the screen.  Does the image slowly move or oscillate?

The monitor has a life of its own. The screen appears if the computer is turned off or disconnected. There is no oscillation. I suspect that it is a factory burn in screen that got triggered somehow. I had my brother reset to the default settings, but it didn't change anything. He hadn't changed anything anyway. He left the monitor on for 30 minutes, but the screen never disappeared.
I think you are right - this could be a factory burn-in triggered by some special control sequence.  Can you call them about it?

I tried to get an answer from HP, but all they suggested is that my brother take the monitor in to a HP qualified service center such as Radio Shack or BestBuy. I think he will just shut it off when he shuts down the computer. So, I guess this is closed.
Thanks!
