Question

How do I change the order in which my AGP and PCI video cards are initialized

Asked by: HeavyRocker

I have two video cards, one AGP and one PCI.  The multiple monitor display is working fine; however, the PCI card is being initialized first, and I'd like to have the AGP card initialize first.  I have a gigabyte GA-81875 mb, Radeon 9200 AGP card, Radeon 7000 PCI card.

Hi HeavyRocker,

I never used this motherboard, but with mine, you can set the "primary display adapter" in the BIOS, see if you have this setting. If so, change it to AGP.

Greetings,

Are you going to run both?  Or can you just pull the PCI card?

There are options in most BIOSs to specifiy whether or not to start up with, say, AGP over built-in.  Perhaps you can specify AGP over PCI there as well?

I want to run both.  But I share the PCI monitor with another dual monitor setup (using an A/B) switch, so sometimes the AGP card is the only one being displayed....when I'm using the PCI-connected monitor with the other setup.

You should really check out your BIOS, that's the place these kind of things can be set.

I tried finding it in BIOS (looked through all the options), but the only thing that looks remotely related to cards was a place to set up IRQ Assignments...and there are no settings for the AGP card on that screen.

I just checked the manual of your motherboard:
http://america.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/FileList/Manual/manual_8i875_e.pdf

And you seem to be out of luck on this one :(

When in windows most dual monitor drivers have the option to specify which is the primary display device.  Open up display properties head into the advanced section, and then many tabs will open up.  Depending whether ATI/Nvidia there will be a mulit monitor tab.  You should be able to play around with that to make the correct monitor to be the default one.

I've had mixed results doing this kind of thing, sometimes it works well, other times it keeps forgetting the settings.. :(  Different versions of the drivers sometimes work better than others.  The latest NVidia drivers have a nice little nView Desktop Manager wizard to help you sort your settings

LucF could you explain your reasonings for that decision of yours since i think it should be PAQ since it does have some potential information in it.

I object against the refund, not agains the PAQ.
For a refund the asker should have responded to every comment made, but from http:#11955876 two possible valuable comments have been made and there was no responce towards them.
