The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Hard drive malfunctioning after power outage

Asked by Joeyman in General Computer Systems

A few months ago, we had a brief power interruption, and my computer was on. When I rebooted it, my 120GB hard drive was very slow to respond, and was making clunking noises. Over the course of a week or so, I made a few attempts to recover the data off of it, but the ominous noises told me it was better to leave it alone. It has been sitting in a box for a couple of months, and I decided tonight to give it another try. It is now working much better, but still not well enough to recover my data. It no longer clunks, and I can browse the drive at the same speed as my new hard drive. I can also open some of the files on the drive, which I was not previously able to do. However, it won't let me copy much if any of the data to my new drive. I tried using Hard Drive Mechanic to fix it, but it didn't diagnose any problems. I'm desperate to get my old data back, so I'm offering 500 points to anyone who can help me retrieve, preferably without having to spend hundreds of dollars to have the drive physically repaired. My old drive is formatted with NTFS, and I'm presently running WinXP Home. I have enough free space on my new drive to copy everything from the old one. Thanks in advance.
