Browse All TopicsA few months ago, we had a brief power interruption, and my computer was on. When I rebooted it, my 120GB hard drive was very slow to respond, and was making clunking noises. Over the course of a week or so, I made a few attempts to recover the data off of it, but the ominous noises told me it was better to leave it alone. It has been sitting in a box for a couple of months, and I decided tonight to give it another try. It is now working much better, but still not well enough to recover my data. It no longer clunks, and I can browse the drive at the same speed as my new hard drive. I can also open some of the files on the drive, which I was not previously able to do. However, it won't let me copy much if any of the data to my new drive. I tried using Hard Drive Mechanic to fix it, but it didn't diagnose any problems. I'm desperate to get my old data back, so I'm offering 500 points to anyone who can help me retrieve, preferably without having to spend hundreds of dollars to have the drive physically repaired. My old drive is formatted with NTFS, and I'm presently running WinXP Home. I have enough free space on my new drive to copy everything from the old one. Thanks in advance.

Here is an old trick that might give you a tempoary fix to recover your data.
Take the drive out and put it a static-free bag. Then put a couple of ziplock bags over that. Put it into the freezer for a couple of hours until cold. Once you take it out of the freezer, connect tthe cables to it while it is still in the bag(keeps it colder). Transfer your data ASAP!
I have used this trick a few times with much success, hope this helps.
