Question

Dell 8100 sparks fly

Asked by: d_may

Hello,
I have had this Dell 8100 in storage for the past four months.
Sparks was seen and nothing happened when I went to turn it on.
I am sure that the plug in (strip) that I used was old.
Could it just be that the power supply and fan will be replaced, or do
these type of "sparks" mean something more serious has occured.
Also , should I ship the unit to Dell for repair?  Out of warrenty
I would like the 20 G hard drive replaced with a 60G (proccesor) 1.3 P-4.
It not like I really need this computer, problem is I still own money on it.  Your suggestions on what you would do if you found yourself with these problems are appreciated.

Myself, I like to tinker, sooooo......

Since the warrenty is gone bye, bye, I would try a different Power Supply first. If no go, I would strip it down to basics and start part swapping. These in another system, and known working parts in this one, to find out what all got fried.  But that is me.    : )

Try another power supply. If you do not have one go to comp usa or best buy and get a power supply tester (about $10). With the jolt of electricity it coulda fried your motherboard as well as other components. Id start with the power suppley and work from there.

since it was in storage im sure it wasnt climate controlled storage and with fluctuating and sometimes intense temperature as well as humidity it coulda afected all the components.

Out of warrenty? better off taking it to a local shop as you wont have to pay enormous shipping amounts or dells rediculous rates.

good luck!
