Does the monitor work OK?

I have my friend's Compaq Presario 5000, and it just doesn't boot. The problem is that the monitor is blank. I can see the HD, CD lights go on, but nothing happens after that. I tried three different video card, but with the same results. I assume that the Motherboard is shot (but have no beeps at bootup), but how to verify? Is there somewhere a utility which I can use at bootup to verify that, for example a program on floppy which would automatically check the computer, and produce a results on the text file?
thanks!

I have had a similar problem, and in my opinion, the mobo is shot. If you have the time and patience, you could install all the stuff from his Presario on a new (and identical, if at all possible) motherboard. Then you'll know if it's indeed the graphics card or the mobo that's shot.
Also, make sure you try a different monitor before anything, because that might be just a hookup cable that's differently pinned, or even broken.
If I'm right, however, there's a problem with the power being supplied to the motherboard. A more powerful, more reliable power supply would be a good investment, and then just resetting the BIOS to get to the default settings would be the only thing standing between you and a working PC.
See which of these is good for you, and get back if you have more trouble.
As long as the power supply you choose is more powerful than the previous one, then choose that. There is certainly a question of reliability, and if you decide to invest big bucks look for Zalman or SilenX, but otherwise something over 350W should easily do the trick.
As far as the BIOS, if you can't get to it, try resetting it by either using the reset jumper (look to your mobo manual for details) or popping the battery for about 1 min. That should effectively bring everything back to 0.
This is a very common problem for the Compaq 5000's. It is an issue with the uWave motherboard that was used. Check this site out for further info: http://www.techspot.com/vb
