The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

IDE vs. SATA vs. my budget ?

Asked by couzin2000 in General Computer Systems

I have an MSI NT4VL mobo, and I've installed an Adaptec AHA-2940 with 2x4.1G SCSI-UW drives. Now, the problem with this is I have 1 drive as my OS (Win XP) and one that holds the Program Files folder, so I can operate faster when I do audio or video processing/encoding. HOWEVER, my SCSI drive holding the OS is so full, it slows my entire system. SO: I'm looking to change these drives (especially since they're quite noisy), but my budget is limited. I don't wanna change my mobo, since I wanna wait another year before investing in a 64-bit system altogether, and I only have a SCSI controller card, and 4 IDE plugs (the standard).

What I wanna know is this: If I buy a SATA adapter and a SATA drive, will I see THAT much of a difference in performance, or should I just buy myself 2 IDE drives with a lot of buffer ram on them? Wouldn't the IDE drives hinder the performance of my CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives, that are currently on independant IDE channels?

I'm just wondering if it's worth psending the extra 100$ for a SATA card and replace my SCSI card with it. OR, should I invest in SCSI drives? I think not, since the price is so high for SCSI stuff, but SATA sounds good. IDE is mass storage for me, not meant for OSes and apps.

Lemme know what you guys think I should go for.
PS: you should know I don't play games at all with my PC, and my mobo has an AGP grafx card, a 10/100 lan card and teh SCSI card are on different IRQs, so their PCI slots aren't gonna be shared IRQs.
