The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

CD-Rom and DVD-ROM working only intermittently.

Asked by dhetrick in General Computer Systems

My father bought an e-machine T3085; has the following specs:

Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
AMD Athlon™ XP 3000+ Processor
QuantiSpeed™ Architecture operates at 2.167 GHz
512KB L2 cache & 333MHz FSB
nVIDIA® nForce™2
7.25"w x 14.125"h x 16"d
160 GB HDD (7200 RPM)
8-in-1 Digital Media Manager (USB 2.0, Secure Digital (SD), Smart Media, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Micro Drive, Multimedia Card)
512 MB DDR (PC 2700)
Expandable to 2 GB
56K* ITU v.92 ready Fax/Modem
10/100Mbps built-in Ethernet
DVD +/- RW Drive (Write Max: 4x DVD+/-R, 2.4x DVD+RW, 2x DVD-RW, 16x CD-R, 10x CDRW; Reads 40x CD, 12x DVD), 48x Max. CD-ROM Drive
Premium Plus Multimedia Keyboard, 2-Button Wheel Mouse, Amplified Stereo Speakers
5 USB 2.0 ports (4 in back; 1 in Media Reader), 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, 2 PS/2, Audio-In & Out
nForce™ 6-channel Audio
nVIDIA® GeForce4™ MX graphics (1 AGP 8x slot available)

The DVD +/- RW Drive, as well as the CD-ROM drive have begun of late had problems completely reading/launching disks upon insertion. When a disk is inserted, there is indication that the disk is being read, but then nothing happens. An attempt to explore the contents shows nothing there. The disk is ejected and then re-inserted. Eventually the system will recognize the disk fully and launch appropriately. Additionally, an inspection of the contents shows stuff on the disk.

Both drives are on the same IDE bus, the CD-Rom as the primary, the DVD drive as the slave. I have tried uninstalling them from the device manager and let the system re-recognize/reload them on start up. Same story. I've checked cabling to the motherboard - seems fine. This is a fairly new system (April 04), and I wouldn't expect hardware problems to manifest themselves so quickly. The intermittent behavior of these drives suggests a common cause, but I need some suggestions of what to try. Thanks!
