Browse All TopicsHello,
Somewhat recently I noticed that my DVD Burner is no longer recognized as a burner by my system, only as a generic DVD drive. So while I can read perfectly well from it, it is not recognized as a writer by any burning software. Exactly when or how this happened is a mystery to me as it has worked perfectly well as a writer in the past. Attempts to update or reinstall the drivers have failed because I have been unable to find current drivers for this product.
The model is NEC 2500A. The drive was purchased OEM so I do not have any software for it, though originally it worked fine upon install (plug and play).
Any assistance in locating drivers for this product or some other way to let the system correctly identify the device would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for the responses, but I am still unable to figure out what the problem is. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the Burner Software (which is Nero Express by the way) and the device itself, both with no sucess. I also tried running the Firmware Flash Utility, but got the following error: "Target NEC ND-2500A is not found correctly."
Any other thoughts/suggestions? Thanks for your help.
Perhaps you should try the trial version of some other burning software, like Alcohol: http://www.alcohol-soft.co
Well, once again it turns out the simplest fix is usually the right one. I finally got the time to transfer the drive to another computer, but as soon as I opened this one up I noticed that the IDE cable was loose on the DVD writer. So I plugged it firmly back into place, rebooted, and the thing works fine.
It turns out that the generic DVD drive that I thought was the burner was actually a virtual drive that I had been playing around with a while ago and forgotten about.
So besides feeling more than little foolish, everything is working fine now. Thank you very much for taking the time to try and help me out.

You don't need a specific driver to make the DVD writer work - it operates off the IDE controller. Sometimes, removing that driver in device manager and letting it reinstall will help, but what probably will be more useful is to reinstall the burner program, since you can read but not write.
