A motherboard BIOS upgrade is the way to get it to see bigger drives, BUT:
- you need to make sure it is the right version for your motherboard
- you need to make sure the new version addresses the capacity problem and will fix it
- you need to make sure the flash process is not interrupted while it is being done

I do not recommend using overlays, which introduce their own problems later.
You should visit your motherboard's website and get the BIOS there.  You will need their flashing program also.

WinXP sp1 and later should be able to handle drives > 137GB.

You need the flash program that corresponds to your BIOS; AWDFLASH is used for Award BIOSes, for example, AMI has another one and Phoenix another.

You create a bootable floppy (www.bootdisk.com has plenty of examples), copy the flash program and bin file to it (or if the bin file is too big, copy it and the flash program to a second floppy), and boot with it.  Run the flash program and specify the name of the bin file you just downloaded.  Most programs will let you make a backup of the current BIOS, which is advisable.  Do not disturb the program while it is flashing, or your motherboard will become unbootable.

Did you check that?

The AWDFLASH program is a link on that page.  You can do it manually, as I described.

A BIOS upgrade is NOT going to correct the problem of your drive capacity being completely available.

Drives over 137.4GB in size must be used with an ATA6 controller - the controller on your motherboard, "Ultra DMA/33 and Ultra DMA/66 (Optional) Bus Master IDE ports" complies with the ATA5 standard and cannot use your drive to its full capacity.  If you wish to do so, you will need an add-in PCI controller for large (over 137.4GB) drive support.

Cards you may want to consider include:

Sorry i forgot.. but the link seems to be there for those just who don't have the upgrade option built-in..
So you have to do it manually as described
... and don't ever touch the PC after the flashing is in progress ... that's definetly no-no .. wait until the flash-prog tells you that it's all over now and you can reboot

> - you need to make sure the new version addresses the capacity problem

I was assuming this condition was investigated and answered, but davidis99 is correct: if the motherboard is too early a model, it will not support larger drives, no matter what.

jamiguel, did you check the BIOS image as to whether it specifically addresses this large disk problem?  There is no point in flashing it if it can't, and judging by the specs of the IDE controller, it can't.

Hi jamiquel!
i also think that davidis99 is right, but as an "addition" to his answer, only as explanation:
you must check also what kind of pci do you have on your motherboard ,cuz most of the pci controllers for adding large disks require pci 64 bit 66Mhz ,if your pci is a 32 bit one 33MHz, you must see that the controller can handle old type of pci slots,if not you'll not be able to correct your problem,,,if you go buying a pci ide controller than be careful - the controller can support pci 32 bit 33Mhz slots,,,
for to see this tech specs of your current pci ,install everest home edition:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=1  then after program is installed, run it and go to :
main menue>computer>DMI>System slots> then click on one of your pci slots shown there and see what is for the "Data Bus Wide" ,if it is 32-bit then you must seek for a 32-bit supporting pci ide controller which can support large disks,e.g. your controller must be backword compatible,,,,
there are the links from davidis99 :
the first link is ok
the second link is ok too
the third link for  Promise Ultra133 TX2 ATA/133 Controller Card,,
http://www.promise.com/marketing/datasheet/file/Ultra133tx2DS_v3.pdf   -  Ultra133 also supports 66MHz PCI motherboards !!!not 33MHz ?
i had a pc with 32 -bit pci slots(33MHz) i tried all the time to figure this problem(Promise Ultra100 TX2) out but i had no luck with this superb controller,i found somewhere that i need the previos version(PromiseUltra100 TX only) of this type promise controllers, which is really backward compatible,,,

Good luck!
