The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

My new computer is too slow!

Asked by sbriffe in General Computer Systems, Personal Computers

I just bought a new computer, an eMachines T3256 with an Athlon AMD XP 3200+ card with 1GB RAM and 400MHZ fsb, running Windows XP Home.  I also installed a SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS sound card and an ATI Radeon 9550 256mb AGP video card.  I thought all of this would amount to a big upgrade in terms of processing speed and power and loading webpages & programs over my previous Sony Vaio PCG-FRV37 notebook, which had a P4 2.8ghz 512MB setup, but it seems to me that this computer is if anything about the same speed, if not slower, when it comes to starting up Windows, ripping CD's, downloading program files, and running programs.  As I'm not very familiar with computer specifications, I would like to know:
1. Did I do the right thing by upgrading to 1GB (2x512) from 512 on this desktop, or is it useless overkill given the rest of the hardware.
2. Same question re: the sound and video cards (it came with a 64mb video card installed).
2. Should this setup be faster than my old computer, given equal amounts of software etc. running on it?
3. Does my setup have any limitations on it's speed that I wasn't aware of compared to, say, a Dell Dimension 8400 P4 3.2mhz setup?
4. Is there anything I can/should do (either software or hardware) if I want faster performance loading webpages and running programs?

Thanks for your help.
